Hi everyone, I’ve narrowed my list of boy names down to 8 but I’m trying to get down to a top 3. Please give me any opinions on these names!

My favourite is Hugo, followed by Rupert.

midsomermurderess · 26/07/2023 23:57

My favourites are Alistair and Laurence (Laurie).

TakenRoot · 26/07/2023 23:53

Albert
Laurence

Jackonary · 26/07/2023 23:51

I like Laurence and Rupert.

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 26/07/2023 23:40

Hugh is my number one. A simple classic that's underused now (Hugo is the opposite, so not my taste- very trendy).

2nd choice Alistair (especially if you have any Scottish links) - always sounds so debonair to me.

3rd Laurence - again very elegant (and Laurie such a sweet diminutive).

Albert's very trendy "old man", Jasper a bit the same, but also makes me think of of pets, Rupert still has slightly posh overtones to me and Edmund's not as classic or nice as Edward imo.

User6761 · 25/07/2023 23:41

Alistair and Laurence are great. I quite like the others except for Jasper and Rupert, don't like them at all.

LardoBurrows · 25/07/2023 20:51

Alistair and Laurence are my favourites.

nameXname · 25/07/2023 20:48

Sorry - I really can spell 'probably'.

nameXname · 25/07/2023 20:45

IF it matters - though you are thinking of using a name from another language so it probabaly ought to - the "correct" spelling of Alistair is Alasdair. It is, as I'm sure you know, the Scottish Gaelic version of Alexander.

dressedforcomfort · 25/07/2023 20:29

Oooh, interesting. You've picked 3 of my absolute fav boys names and 3 of my most loathed ones!

Love:
Alistair
Edmund
Laurence (although prefer Lawrence spelling)

Don't mind
Hugh
Albert

Absolutely loathe
Hugo
Jasper (cat name)
Rupert

TheCyclingGorilla · 25/07/2023 12:55

I like Albert. All the others sound a bit wet to me.

blondie87 · 25/07/2023 12:54

Albert
Edmund
Laurence

Coronationstation · 25/07/2023 12:37

Alistair is the only one of those I like and I really like it!

xxalhxx · 25/07/2023 10:11

Definitely Hugo as that was one of my baby name choices and I didn't go with it so this is a sign you should😂😂

doeandfawn · 25/07/2023 10:00

Albert - makes me think of the piercing. Bertie is a very cute nn though.
Alistair - love it, the one I know gets shortened to Al/Ali all the time so depends how you feel about that.
Edmund - fine, boring.
Hugh - feels like a creepy uncle name.
Hugo - like it a lot, but definitely carries a posh vibe.
Jasper - love it, no notes.
Laurence - nice but doesn’t feel special.
Rupert - like it a lot.

Top 3:
Jasper
Alistair
Rupert

Jongleterre · 25/07/2023 09:56

Albert - Uncle Albert Only fools .....
Alistair - Chrystal Tips and Alistair.
Edmund - Blackadder.
Hugh - Grant. Yuck.
Hugo - quite like.
Jasper - also quite like.
Laurence - lovely name.
Rupert - Rupert the bear or Whippet if you've heard of him!

Mumofgirls2017 · 25/07/2023 09:55

Albert- like, but not so keen on Albie
Alistair- I’m not a fan
Edmund- prefer Edward. Ted is nice nn.
Hugh- really not keen on this one and is dated. Wet name for me.
Hugo- bit trendy, not a fan really either
Jasper- love
Laurence- it’s ok
Rupert- like

my favourite is jasper. Rupert would be second.

TempsPerdu · 25/07/2023 09:48

Albert - a bit run of the mill now. So many Albies around, and I really dislike this as a nickname.
Alistair - lovely
Edmund - very nice. Feels distinguished. Lots of nickname options.
Hugh - OK, a bit plain
Hugo - no, too trendy now and it’s very much an ‘aspirationally upmarket’ name
Jasper - nice but trendy
Laurence - lovely. Really like the associations (other than Fox!) and Laurie as a nickname
Rupert - still too stereotypically posh for me. Not keen.

Alistair, Edmund and Laurence would be my shortlist - all fab.

KirstenBlest · 25/07/2023 09:40

Albert - not keen, don't like Albie or Bertie
Alistair - like
Edmund - ok
Hugh - like
Hugo - like but it's trendy
Jasper - like but it's trendy
Laurence - not keen
Rupert - not keen

Alistair, Edmund or Hugh

OopsieeDaisy · 25/07/2023 09:36

Albert - I like Albert and a lot of the nickname options but can’t get past the Prince Albert piercing connotations
Alistair - not a fan but nothing wrong with it
Edmund - not keen, seems dated
Hugh - always sounds unfinished to me
Hugo - posh boy name
Jasper - dog/cat’s name
Laurence - love this and Laurie as a nickname
Rupert - also really like this, Roo is a very cute nn for a baby/toddler

Vexxa · 25/07/2023 09:09

I love your list OP, we have very similar taste. Hugo, Jasper, Laurence and Rupert are my favourites - love all of these. Currently pregnant with a girl but if it had been a boy Hugo was at the top of my list, only because DH is less keen on the others.

Notellinganyone · 25/07/2023 08:33

I have an Edmund - great name ! Can be shortened to Ed/Eddie/Ned but has gravitas too. Full disclosure- he did go to a private school although only because we taught there so got a discount. He likes it too. I also really like Rupert and Laurie for Laurence.

user1492757084 · 25/07/2023 08:11

Top three ..
Alistair
Edmund
Hugh

Next ..Hugo and Rupert

On the bottom -- Albert, Jasper and Laurence.

18baldingstar · 25/07/2023 07:55

Edmund - with nn Edo

shoopshoopdedoo · 25/07/2023 05:37

Albert - OK, very popular
Alistair - really like. The one I know is lovely, the name suits a baby and a man and doesn’t pigeonhole the owner
Edmund - OK, prefer Edward
Hugh - not keen
Hugo - really dislike, plus very popular
Jasper - really dislike
Laurence - OK
Rupert - dislike

Top 3:

  1. Alistair (miles ahead of the others)
  2. Edmund
  3. Laurence
