RoseApp · 24/07/2023 18:22

Stuck on names. So far we have
Thisbe
Tabitha
Thea
Elowen
Xanthe
Callista

Suggestions welcome. We quite like Greek/mythology/mystic/romantic (I can’t think of the right term )

How about these: Helen / Helena, Cressida, Diana, Anthea, Aura, Daphne, Gaia ...?

YomAsalYomBasal · 24/07/2023 21:16

Thea (and Theo) very popular at the moment, we have so many at preschool that it gets confusing.
I've always loved Xanthe. I once knew a lovely girl with that name.

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 24/07/2023 21:14

Isolde?
There are many variations though.

My DD says Persephone but I hate the myth.

Rosalind is lovely.

Brk · 24/07/2023 21:14

Cross Thisbe off the list, shenwould hate all the frisbee jokes.

The rest are nice , I particularly like Elowen. (Or Elodie?)

SmirnoffIceIsNice · 24/07/2023 21:13

I like Tabitha and Thea, but the latter is quite popular at the moment.

Other Greek Mythology names - Rhea, Thalia, Calliope. I used to work with a young woman named Calliope but she called herself Calli.

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 24/07/2023 21:12

The mechanicals were performing the play within the play Pyramus and Thisbe

FraterculaArctica · 24/07/2023 21:10

Like Tabitha and love Xanthe.

Thisbe - no. One of a gang of characters in A Midsummer Night's Dream that also included Pyramus and a donkey named Bottom. Not a good association.

How about Thessaly? (I don't know if anyone uses this as a name, but I think it sounds great)

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 24/07/2023 21:05

The only downside is that there appears to be 3 ways of pronouncing it?

How to Pronounce Thalia - PronounceNames.com - Bing video

I pronounce it TAR- lee- a (emphasis on ta)
not th sound or ta-LEE-a
It means to blossom and is one of the Muses

InstantGratificationDarkPlaygroundOfMN · 24/07/2023 21:00

I love the name Thalia

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 24/07/2023 20:58

I love Thisbe, my friend has a little girl called this and she never gets called Frisbee.

I also love Calliope
Artemisia
Minerva (Minnie for short)
Persephone (Seffy)
Hebe
Hester
Athena
Flora
Helen

BlastedPimples · 24/07/2023 20:57

Thea or Tabitha

RubyDarke · 24/07/2023 20:56

I like Elowen but my DD2 also has a Cornish name.

Snailandthefail · 24/07/2023 20:56

I know a Tabitha, she is Tiggy for short which I LOVE!

Totallyconfusedperson · 24/07/2023 20:53

I like Tabitha and Elowen

what about Thursa, Talia, Tanith?

shoopshoopdedoo · 24/07/2023 20:50

I quite like Tabitha and Xanthe. I’d worry about the potential for “this be” jokes with Thisbe.

How about Phoebe, Daphne, Calliope, Althea, Ariadne?

cadentiasidera · 24/07/2023 20:10

I agree with pp who said Talitha is a lovely alternative to Tabitha.

Thea seems to be quite popular at the moment. I'm afraid Thisbe just makes me giggle about Bottom et al trying to perform the play about them in Midsummer night's dream and it's supposed to be tragic but just ends up being silly!

Persephone? Penelope?

PickledScrump · 24/07/2023 19:41

Tabitha is lovely, it always gets ridiculous comments about being a cats name on nn but it seems exclusive to on here. I’m not keen on the others

doglover90 · 24/07/2023 19:37

If you like Greek mythology, how about Persephone, Helen, Selene, Cassandra or Iris?

HundredMilesAnHour · 24/07/2023 19:29

sunshineandtea · 24/07/2023 19:26

They're all ridiculous and try-hard IMO

This. Just go with Frisbee.

sunshineandtea · 24/07/2023 19:26

They're all ridiculous and try-hard IMO

BlowDryRat · 24/07/2023 19:20

Thisbe sounds like someone's lisping frisbee.

KirstenBlest · 24/07/2023 19:17

Thisbe - a bit too close to 'this be' and 'lispy'
Tabitha - ok
Thea - meh and Theo is overused
Elowen - will be mispronounced and misspelt
Xanthe - ok
Callista - prefer it with only one l

Whatisityoucantface · 24/07/2023 19:14

I like Tabitha a lot. Tabea is the German diminutive which I think is lovely

RoseApp · 24/07/2023 18:50

Thanks everyone. I did wonder about Thisbe and lisping. We like Thea but it seems quite common at the moment?

17caterpillars1mouse · 24/07/2023 18:38

I love Thisbe but then also love Hebe and feel they are very similar

Tabitha is growing on me, but I prefer Talitha as I like Tallie but Tabby just makes me think cat.

Thea is OK but quite popular in my area which puts me off

Elowen is nice but I imagine will just become another Ellie. Love Olwen

Xanthe is nice but I'm not a fan of X's at the start of names and Zanthe looks wrong and too like Zante

I don't know why I don't like Callista but I don't
