DH and I like Ellie, but we're not so keen on Eleanor. What else could Ellie be short for?

Elodie?

moonlitoctopus · 25/07/2023 22:08

Literally any girls name beginning with El or just Ellie.

Merrz · 25/07/2023 21:57

I know two Ellie's and their full names are Ellie. It's absolutely a name on it's own, doesn't need to be short for anything 😊

Eleanor
Elise
Elina
Ellen

If you want to call her Ellie, then call her that! Why on earth people give a (longer) name when they know they will actually call the child by another one completely bamboozles me!

mathanxiety · 25/07/2023 17:34

It's fine as a full name.

I know a few people called Ellie and that’s their full name.

My niece is Ellie, full name Eloise. Only gets used when she’s in trouble 😂 Beautiful name though.

I'm struggling to think of a negative/unpleasant Eleanor, but Elinor is another alternative (as in Dashwood).

Rpolo · 23/07/2023 19:30

My daughter is Ellie-May 💖

moonlitoctopus · 23/07/2023 19:03

It's a name in its own right.
I recently met a lovely lady named Ellie from Poland! She was just Ellie. It's quite fascinating how Ellie can be both a common and informal name, as well as a prefix for more sophisticated and elegant names. The other Ellie I know is an Eloise. There are 5 Ella's in my nieces year group (she's 13) but l no Ellie's.

Eleanor

Graziella, Gabrielle/a, Elena, Eleanor, Michelle

It could be anything with the el sound.

But absolutely you could have Ellie in its own right. My DD is a similar and I didn't like any of the long versions so had she shorter version in its own right.

Sandysandwich · 23/07/2023 18:27

I knew one who was Elle (pronounced L) and it was lengthened to Ellie when she was little as Elle seemed like a very grown up name on a toddler.

Thank you all! Or could she just be "Ellie" on its own?

Exactly, it’s evolved like Sophie from Sophia
