Welsh names

We're expecting our first baby in dec/jan
My partner is welsh and so were my grandparents and we are looking into welsh names
they really like dafyd, which is a good name in wales but I suspect may become daffy like the duck in england
welsh girls names seem easier somehow, more familiar/easy spelling and pronunciation, so any ideas for boy names?

You can find where surnames are most popular using this link:
named - Map your surname across the UK (publicprofiler.org)

Allen seems to be most popular in the midlands and south of England and Northern Ireland, and Allan in Scotland.

Might be useful if you are planning on using a surname as a first name.

I can't argue with you about what people say to you. Jones certainly sounds welsh, but it makes me think of Bridget Jones and Samantha Jones

You'd need to explain the link to Owain Glyndwr to me.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 29/07/2023 17:52

I like Owen and Elis, and Steffan, but Steffan because I know two really nice Steffans. Arthur said the Welsh way is great.

I thought Allen was english and Allan was scottish. It's not welsh.
Bowen seems a bit strange as a first name - it's a surname, son of Owen, like Owens. Rhydderch is nice, but probably wouldn't travel well.

Everyone I've spoken to has said Allen-Jones sounds like a very welsh last name. I also like the name Bowen due to its links to Owain Glyndwr but each to there own

Right

There's nothing wrong with Welsh spelling or pronunciation, @GettingStuffed, it's phonetic!

Ieuan is pretty much impossible to get right unless you speak Welsh. It's nearer YEY-ann. You might hear Yigh-un (from non-speakers).
Ffion is FEE-onn, but might get spelt as Fionn or Fion.
Dafydd - RTFT. Smile

@sophieliz , I'm trying to imagine a very Welsh double-barrelled surname, ap Iorwerth-ap Rhydderch or something more like Morgan-Parry.Smile

Haha no, it's probably just really Welsh to me as I'm English. It's Allen-Jones so Violet is off our baby name list at VAJ as the initials just isn't right 😂😂

Ceryss · 29/07/2023 14:55

I have a Steffan, would have been Alys if a girl.

DaNiYmaOHyd · 29/07/2023 14:48

It's the Welsh word for toy @SuePine69 .

SuePine69 · 29/07/2023 14:36

Is Tegan a Welsh name? I live just outside of Wales but there is a village called Landican which I've read means the church of (Saint) Tegan. I think today it's used as a girl's name but used to be a boy's name too.

We have a Dafydd, known as Daf, pronounced Dav and a Ffion pronounced Feeon. I nearly called my eldest Ieuan

Y eye an. The main problem with Welsh names is not the pronunciation but the spelling.

sophieliz · 29/07/2023 10:43

I am also currently looking at Welsh names as my partner is Welsh and he wants one but he has a VERY welsh double barrelled last name.

I like Lowri and Mabli and I also like Bowen and Elis although my partner likes Steffan (named after a rugby player)

NoFitStateMum · 23/07/2023 17:44

Elin, Anwen, Celyn, Bethan, Delyth, Megan and Erin are all quite easy to say Welsh names for girls.

For boys, what about Tomos, Teilo, Efan / Evan, Caio, Elis or Jac?

sunglassesonthetable · 23/07/2023 17:42

oh love Tudur.

Also
Twm
Efan

Twm probably looks really strange to an anglophile eye but it's actually straightforward. T - OOMM ( oo as in cook not as in moon)

alittleadvicepls · 23/07/2023 17:30

I love Owain and Llewelyn

DaNiYmaOHyd · 23/07/2023 17:23

The name was in use long before Tudur Owen.

I'd suggest David. Could shorten to Dai, Dei, Deio, Deian or even Daf.
Rhagfyr, Calan or Ionawr would make a nice middle name, if born in December, NYE or January, respectively.

StillWantingADog · 23/07/2023 16:59

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/07/2023 19:27

Ieuan
Arwel
Ioan

Angharad
Bethan

My dad had a welsh colleague called Tudor, which I thought was cool name.

Tudor is anglicised, the original welsh would be Tudur

iatealltheminieggs · 22/07/2023 19:44

Emrys was my boys choice (i had 2 girls)

DaNiYmaOHyd · 22/07/2023 19:42

Too close to Tarantula for me.

Fatkittythinkitty · 22/07/2023 19:42

Oh and a bit left field but one of my kids has one in their class: Taran. It's Welsh for thunder. Never heard it used as a name before but I like it. And I think someone English could have a stab at it and get it right.

Debini · 22/07/2023 19:42

Oh and Eira too 😄

Debini · 22/07/2023 19:40

For boys I like Rhodri, Emrys and Tudor.
I really love Rhiannon for a girl.

Fatkittythinkitty · 22/07/2023 19:37

How about

Elis
Steffan
Macsen

All quite easy to pronounce?
