Faraday or Iris or...?

Struggling to find a girl's name I love.

I like slightly unusual but not too 'out-there' names, and also not a huge fan of girls' names ending in -a, though there are a few exceptions.

Is Faraday too out there? Any other suggestions?

Iris is fine

Faraday is just stupid

These are some of the most hideous names I have ever heard.

Lol. That really made me laugh.

windowof · 21/07/2023 19:05

Faraday is definitely without a doubt too out there. OP you may be at the stage of pregnancy I was at when I thought Valedina would be a pretty name.
Fear not MN, I came to my senses and put it down to crazy pregnancy hormones clouding my judgement!

@titchy, Balonz is a bit overused here. 2 in DS1's school year and a Balonz-Rose, Balonz-Mae and Balonz-Elle in DD's school year. Think it's more or less unisex.

titchy · 21/07/2023 14:20

Has anyone suggested Balonz?

VeryQuaintIrene · 21/07/2023 14:15

@continentallentil Evadne's not made up - in myth, she flung herself off the Acropolis of Thebes when her husband was killed. So hideous sound and not great associations. But deffo not made up.

DuchessOfSausage · 21/07/2023 14:07

@continentallentil , most of them aren't made up. Iris isn't particularly overdone, it's at #70

Newbie887 · 21/07/2023 13:53

Iris is pretty but does make me think of eyeballs. Not keen on Faraday. However you are always going to get people having different tastes to you so what other people think shouldn’t make a difference. Otherwise we would all have the same name.

I have an Avalon. Other names I loved were Margot, Noelle, Vivienne

SkaneTos · 20/07/2023 23:07

I have never heard the name Faraday used as a first name.
I am familiar with it as a surname (Michael Faraday and the Faraday cage).

Iris is a lovely name.

Cornflowers35 · 20/07/2023 21:51

Thank you @YomAsalYomBasal , it looked it. I think a far better option than Faraday.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 20/07/2023 18:19

DuchessOfSausage · 19/07/2023 12:41

She could have Kaige as a middle name

Grin
YomAsalYomBasal · 20/07/2023 18:10

Yes, I believe so.

Cornflowers35 · 20/07/2023 18:00

Hi @YomAsalYomBasal

Is that Persian?

IggyAce · 20/07/2023 17:53

A little out there, I much prefer Farrah or Fallon.

nameXname · 20/07/2023 17:50

As others have already said - but it needs repeating - Farida/Faridah/Farideh (and associated spellings) is a Muslim female name, meaning 'precious pearl'. The Farida I know pronounces it 'Fah-REE-dah', though the precise enunciation will depend on country of origin/local language etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farida_(given_name)

Faraday is an English surname, the name of a very brilliant and famous English male scientist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Faraday It's usually pronounced 'FARR-uh-day'.

Guineapiggiesmalls · 20/07/2023 04:57

Do you like Faraday because of Michael? If so, then maybe Hedi would be a more subtle science inspired name, after Hedi Lamarr?

I'm usually the first to be sniffy about odd names, but I actually quite like it!

A neighbor of mine is called Meriweather; I like that too.
