What do people think of the name Ebeneezer, please.

I would say something and quick. Then it is up to them.

Or does it fit in with the sibling or family names?

The baby is born and named, but the birth not registered yet... so if I am going to say anything it has to be more or less immediate. I'm paralysed with indecision! I was shocked, but tbh, it could be growing on me - or maybe the shock is just wearing off a bit

I wouldn't worry too much. I can't imagine there's a family in the land that won't have an Uncle Neil and/or a Granny Susan who won't exclaim on the family chat 'have you gone mad?'.

from this, it does sound like there are actually a few Ebeneezers around.

Ben sounds like a good nick name

I know an birth certificate Ebeneezer who goes by Eben day to day. Although the Mum is often on FB rating about the pronunciation as often people say it to rhyme with Even.

He is going to be nicknamed "Eben".

If they are in the UK, I would ask what made them think of the name and I would want to make sure that they realise the most common associations here are with Scrooge and with the Shamen song referencing drug use, both of which might lead to teasing at school.

If they are anywhere on the planet more like.

Sherlock (Holmes) aside I can't think of a fictional character with a more famous first name globally than Ebenezer (Scrooge).

Could anyone really be cruel enough to give their child such a stupid, awful name?

ginoclocksomewhere · 13/07/2023 14:13

We found out my friend 'Ben' was 'Ebenezer' at his wedding! Knew him nearly 15yrs.

One of the most famous names in fiction, a kid would get ribbed relentlessly.

You can just see it..."oh don't be a scrooge"

if it was a sibling or a very close friend I'd say 'cop yourself on, babe'. If it's just an acquaintance or colleague I'd just do a mild 'oh you don't meet many of those, do you?'.

Groutyonehereagain · 13/07/2023 14:10

Awful, he’s going to be called Scrooge all his life. Tell them that.

Candymay · 13/07/2023 14:08

E’s are good E’s are good

Totallyconfusedperson · 13/07/2023 14:07

Oh man you mean two people both agreed it’s a great name for a baby boy? Are you sure they’re not pulling your legs?

I think only response you can give is…. Oh that’s unusual, you don’t hear that name often these days…

CountryStore · 13/07/2023 14:07

I'm of a certain age and immediately think Goode. Will they nickname him Eezer?

MmaRra · 13/07/2023 14:05

If they are devout Christians, they could have got it from the Bible.

25sheets · 13/07/2023 14:04

Goode

TeamSleep · 13/07/2023 14:03

If they ask for your opinion however be honest OP.

Tara336 · 13/07/2023 14:02

It's awful

TeamSleep · 13/07/2023 14:02

No I wouldn’t mention because it’s nobody else’s business but the parents what they name their child and they might not care what others think.

MmaRra · 13/07/2023 13:59

I think Marley would be better.
