What do people think of the name Ebeneezer, please.

In the words of Roy Kent

"Faaaaack No!"

Don't do it OP

Heurgh · 13/07/2023 20:00

I don't think that e is going to make much difference. (Hee hee, Shamen fans). It's like saying, Oh, she's Jayne not Jane.

WhatADrabCarpet · 13/07/2023 19:56

It's pretentious and daft.

ArcticBells · 13/07/2023 19:55

No

Superdupes · 13/07/2023 19:50

Awful. Love Eben though.
Maybe rave on about Eben and say that you love it so much you'd put that on the birth certificate.

I've "decided" not to mention it although it isn't really a decision as such, I don't feel able to mention my concerns. And I have to say it is growing on me a bit, although I might actually say what has been said on here about the other spelling, Ebenezer, instead of Ebeneezer. I do feel able to say that! It isn't criticising their choice of name, just saying I think one spelling will be easier that another, due to it being more common.

I'm glad that you've decided not to say anything. It's definitely for the best Wink

DMVJ · 13/07/2023 19:43

No!

PurpleButterflyWings · 13/07/2023 19:37

No.

TheChosenTwo · 13/07/2023 19:36

Why do people saddle their kids with such awful and silly names that they themselves don’t use either because they use a derivative of it???
just use the bloody name that you like ffs.
Do you know what I call my dc? The names I chose for them at birth of course!!!
ps, OP I hate the name but don’t think it’s really your place to intervene 😂

I think I'd rather be a Uriah than an Ebenezer. But then again, lots of people would probably think it was pronounced urea...and that would, ahem, piss me off.

There's was a child named Auryn in my dcs class at school I always thought it sounded like urine!

I know an Ebenezer called Eben. Fab name and Eben very cool and suits him. It means "thus far God has helped us" and refers to a biblical stone marking a place of victory in a battle with the philistines. From Samuel.

A name saying how God has helped you seems a good omen to me.

jonahjones · 13/07/2023 19:31

I think of the shamen song too. suppose the babies generation though will never of heard of that song so won't make that connection.
Ebenezer scrooge is a much more well known character though so may get some ribbing about that.

Got any veras?

😂😂😂

ArthurPoppy · 13/07/2023 19:25

I like it and all the potential nicknames

Soapyspuds · 13/07/2023 19:24

There's a guy in the place who's got a bittersweet face
And he goes by the name of Ebeneezer Goode
His friends call him 'Ezeer and he is the main geezer
And he'll vibe up the place like no other man could
He's refined, sublime, he makes you feel fine
Though very much maligned and misunderstood
But if you know 'Ezeer he's a real crowd pleaser
He's ever so good, he's Ebeneezer Goode
You can see that he's mischievous, mysterious and devious
When he circulates amongst the people in the place
But once you know he's fun, and something of a genius
He gives a grin that goes around from face to face to face
Backwards and then forwards, forwards and then backwards
'Eezer is the geezer who loves to muscle in
That's about the time the crowd all shout the name of 'Eezer
As he's kotcheled in the corner, laughing by the bass bin

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 13/07/2023 19:22

would you mention to relative that this does not seem like the best choice?

Not at all.

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 13/07/2023 19:20

Definitely die a revival Wink

SecretVictoria · 13/07/2023 18:23

Extraordinary fella…

ginoclocksomewhere · 13/07/2023 18:20

@LakeTiticaca there were looks, and the best man's speech had a line about not having to keep it secret any longer 🤣

SwordToFlamethrower · 13/07/2023 18:10

E's are good, E's are good! He's Ebenezer good!

BonnyJiggs · 13/07/2023 17:05

He is going to be nicknamed "Eben".

Eben ranked 992 in the top 1000 baby names.

Justleaveitblankthen · 13/07/2023 16:53

Of course not 😂
But the finest Actor to ever play him has a lovely name. Alastair (Sim)

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 13/07/2023 16:49

the Biblical meaning of Ebenezer means stone of help "Thus far the LORD has helped us" it doesn't have a double "EE"
but most folks will associate more with Scrooge
it was a more popular name among Christians in Late Victorian times

Musomama1 · 13/07/2023 16:44

He's name is Ebeneezer he's a really fine geezer - or something.

I love the Shaman song, it's a cool association in my book - but his generation will have no clue of it.

It's the Scrooge thing puts me of because being called a Scrooge is still a thing.
