If I like Cedric

I absolutely love the name Cedric and can't find anything I like more... my husband wants to have a couple to choose from it it's a boy.

We have a DD with an unusual welsh name so I don't want anything popular.

I know Cedric is very marmite and I'm expecting to get flamed... but I still love it

Here's a wee bit of Cedric trivia for you, Walter Scott made up the name Cedric for his novel Ivanhoe.

There was an Anglo Saxon king called Cerdic but Walt reckoned it sounded better the other way round.

It's not clear where Scott got Cedric, but there are some theories that doesn't include made up origin

Name of the Week

From Ivanhoe to Harry Potter, Cedric is a gallant literary choice with medieval flair. Origin: Cedric is a literary adaption, created by Sir Walter Scott for his novel Ivanhoe (1819). Most commonly, it is assumed that Scott based Cedric on (or misspell...

I thought Cedric was made up too. Thanks for the reference @ditalini

I have no name suggestions to add, I'm just here to say OMG Cedric 🥰 Wish I'd thought of that 3 years ago when DS was bring born! Please use it!

ItsYourColdDayInTheSun · 02/07/2023 19:09

I might be biased because my son is called Wulfric, but it's a great name. He gets Wulfie more often than not. If you spell in with a U instead of an O, it's Albus Dumbledore's middle name.

midsomermurderess · 02/07/2023 19:07

Ooh, Wolfric, now that’s a name. I also like Alaric, as suggested upthread. He was the first king of the Visigoths. I also like Clovis, but perhaps not outside France.

I love Cecil, as long as your DD’s Welsh name isn’t Ce- (eg Cerys, Celyn, Ceridwen).

Also Arthur (NB v popular), Stanley, Peter, Percival, Gethin.

Cedric is bad. Please don't lumber a real life kid with this. Give it to a dog.

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 02/07/2023 16:24

I love the name Cedric and I cannot see anything objectionable about it except that it fell out of favour 70/80 years ago. About time it was resurrected as it's actually a good strong Old English name.

ExhaustedPigeon3 · 02/07/2023 16:22

My cat is Cedric aka Ced, Ceddy and Cedrico. It’s a very cool name!

I love Cedric and, for a girl, Cedrica. These Old English names deserve a good airing. There are heaps of little Eds, Freds and Teds at large, so why not a Ced?

Peregrine nn Perry.

How about Silas? I think it’s a fabulous name and gives me similar vibes to Cedric
