Is Rowan really that popular?

I’ve seen on mumsnet before that it’s a really popular name. I only know of one that’s a girl atm (and I’m thinking for a boy). Do you know many?

But the stress in "Joanne" is on the last syllable?

It's not overpopular but for boys is disappears into all the Roman, Rory, Reuben, ... type names that are currently popular.

Of those, I teach a couple of Reuben's but not taught a Roman or Rory. So again, not overly popular names here either. I have also taught a child named Rohan.

I think a lot of these kind of names are very much regional trends.

Qilin · 30/06/2023 08:59

I know one woman, probably late 30s /early 40s called Rowan and have taught one child, girl aged about 10 or so now I think) also called Rowan.

So, it isn't overly popular here.

My DS is Rowan (would have been had he been a girl too).

Have to say I can't imagine anyone would confuse it with Joanne, which belongs to a demographic now in their 40s/50s?!!

It’s when you introduce yourself, particularly over the phone!

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2023 08:35

Sorry I meant to add I've heard of boys too.

Mrsjayy · 30/06/2023 08:28

It would have been a girl Rowan for me,

biscuitcat · 30/06/2023 08:20

I have a male toddler Rowan and know a middle aged female Rowan. A few people commented that my son's name is unusual, and I've not met another little one with the name. I'm biased of course, but it's a gorgeous name!

Rowan has been about for decades I wanted to call one of mine Rowan dh vetoed it, anyway its a lovely name does it matter if its popular?

CastleTower · 30/06/2023 08:16

It's worth checking popularity stats for your area, too. Fwiw, we know lots of children age 4 and under, and there aren't any others with Ro- names (other than Rory). But I know Roman is popular in some areas, we just haven't come across any.

It doesn't sound much like Joanne at all though...!

fantasmasgoria1 · 30/06/2023 08:12

DD went to school with a couple of Rowans, both female.

Giltedged · 30/06/2023 08:09

I’m not keen for a boy to be honest but I just think it sounds very feminine (or makes me think of Mr Bean …!)

It is okay for girls, not my favourite - main problem is everyone will think you are called Joanne.

Iwouldliketogotosweden · 30/06/2023 08:08

I know 2 boys under one and one boy who is about 8. It’s a lovely name!

AnotherDayAnotherUsernameForMeAgain · 30/06/2023 08:05

Two at DD’s primary school (11 and 6ish) and our next door neighbour just named their newborn son Rowan too.

PickledScrump · 30/06/2023 08:03

I know one male rowan in mid 20s, several toddlers both male and female. Also know children called Rohan, Ronan, Ronin, Rowan, Roman. Which makes those sorts of names all sound more popular.

Jellylover · 30/06/2023 08:00

Ah it’s my most favourite name. I prefer the spelling Rohan. DD2 was going to be called it but DH and i couldn’t agree.

CastleTower · 30/06/2023 07:55

We've met a few babies called Rory at groups and things - glad we didn't use it, as it was also on our list!

CastleTower · 30/06/2023 07:45

I have a baby one. We've come across another baby Rowan locally, who is a girl. Don't know any others.

Vexxa · 30/06/2023 07:30

I know 3, two toddler boys and a man in his 20s.

Verite1 · 30/06/2023 00:30

I know a 6 year old girl and a 13 year old boy.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 29/06/2023 23:44

I have a 25 year old Rowan He has never met another
Obviously I'm biased but I love his name

CC4712 · 29/06/2023 23:01

I only know a male in his early 20's

Pieceofpurplesky · 29/06/2023 22:58

I know two female Rowans. 14 and 52.
Lovely name

WotNoUserName · 29/06/2023 22:53

The Rowans I know are a teenage boy, a teenage girl and a 5 year old girl, and a friend of a friend, middle aged woman.

It's a lovely name, and a definite unisex name.
