Would you be annoyed if your best friend chose a similar baby name?

We’ve had our heart set on a baby name and become quite attached to it over the last few months, it’s probably the only name we both loved and agreed on 100%

However, my best friend just had a baby and the name they’ve chosen is coincidentally very similar, as in one letter deferent and rhymes.

think along the lines of
Daisy & Maisy
Cara & Lara
Eva & Ava
Ida & Ada
Minnie & Winnie
Lilly & Tilly

I can’t help thinking she might find it strange if we go ahead with the similar name, but feel very sad to let it go as we’ve become so used to calling bump this name in private & I feel emotional about letting it go.

Neither name is super popular.

what would you do?

If I was you I’d speak to her, she’ll probably be understanding knowing you’ve had that name a while.

I had a few friends pregnant with girls due before me and I wouldn’t have minded if they gave their little ones similar or even the same name as mine but I was keen not to look like I’d copied if that was the case, so before we even knew what we were having I was telling people what names we’d settled on. None of them named their children anything similar anyway, however my ‘father’ (in the loosest sense of the word) did name his little girl who was born 8 weeks after mine something similar. Now that REALLY pissed me off 😂

A close friend and I have DGDs born very close together and with the same name and we just laughed about the fact that we both now had a little Axxxx

KirstenBlest · 05/10/2023 08:34

I have two cousins with very similar names (think Holly and Molly) and the same surname. They work for the same company. It's not a big issue.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 04/10/2023 22:32

Wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

Go ahead and name your baby what you want. I think your friend done it on purpose! Also if next time you become pregnant just keep saying 'pugwash'🙂 ! I wonder if next time she will copy you!!

She might have had the baby now?

Wouldnt bother me. And most of those examples - they rhyme but they’re not similar. Loads of names rhyme

Houseofpainjumparound · 30/06/2023 07:52

My best mate named her child the opposite sex version of my daughters.... not quite the same admittedly but it has never bothered me even though they both have the same nickname.... its a name....

My SIL literally made up a name just to have a rhyming name with my DC! I was a bit bemused about that because it seemed a bit much. And then, HER SIL made up yet another name to rhyme with my SIL’s child’s name (and therefore also with my child’s name) which was a step too far for me … I never said anything but I do think it makes us seem vaguely ridiculous whenever anyone finds out 😂 I just try to think positive like - well, at least my DC is a) the oldest and b) has the only real name of the bunch so people won’t think I’m involved in this madness.

If my best friend chose a name that rhymed with my child’s name I’d probably be way less bothered because I love my best friend and also because she presumably wouldn’t just make up a random name for the sake of matching!

This is bonkers. I'd love to know what the names are but can see why you wouldn't want to share so I'm going to make some up 😁

Lucy, Moosey and Goosey
Sarah, Hairah and Mairah
Josh, Posh and Gosh

Name your baby what you like but it might not hurt to have another think in case there's other nanes you like. I had my heart set on a name but then my husband's cousin announced she was going to use it and at first I was like 'tough I'm going to use it anyway' but it did put us off the name and we ended up choosing one that we loved more and I can't imagine our baby being called anything else.

Rufusroo · 29/06/2023 16:35

My best friend (from childhood) has chosen the same name as my DD although her daughter is called by the full name and mine is always known by its diminutive. I don’t find it odd at all. Tell your friend that you love the name she has chosen and tell her the name that you call your bump. That way she can get used to the situation before your little one is born

No issues, wouldn't even consider changing my preferred baby name because it's similar to friend's. A good friend of mine had a DD just a few weeks after me and chose the exact same name - no problems, I don't own a name.

Mamabear48 · 29/06/2023 09:41

If she’s your best friend then surely you can tell her what your baby name is. If she’s really a best friend she won’t care. I wouldn’t care if my best friend named her kids the same as mine.

seahorsesandmermaids · 29/06/2023 07:56

I don't think it matters at all.

Polly and Holly would be fine.
Although if she had a Rosie and you then had a Posie, that might seem a bit more "deliberate" if that makes sense.

In general though, I'd go with your heart. It will be fine.

Holly03 · 29/06/2023 04:35

Oh yes I had a family member do it. Announced the name whilst pregnant and she then named her child a name that rhymes with what I’d picked. I ended up choosing another name to save on embarrassment

WandaWonder · 29/06/2023 03:42

Why would it matter? I may havefelt that at 16 if I had a baby then perhaps but as a grown up not bothered

Aquamarine1029 · 29/06/2023 03:24

I fail to see how this is even an issue. You're overthinking.

Brandspankingnewandshiny · 29/06/2023 03:03

Use your name. It's actually quite sweet if they also end up being friends

MirandaBlu · 29/06/2023 03:03

Daisy and Maisie (I know those aren't the real names!) sound like awesome kick-arse teen cowgirl detectives. I would go for it, especially as the two girls won't be related and won't have the same last name. For what it's worth - as an observer, I'd be much more likely to assume that two very good friends just happened to have similar taste in names, rather than that the second to give birth was influenced by the first.

Theoldgreygoose · 29/06/2023 01:28

It wouldn't bother me at all. Two women I worked with, best friends, have daughters with very similar names, it's never been an issue.

ditchingtherat · 28/06/2023 20:57

My best friends daughter has the same name as my dd. We became friends after we had our children. Our husbands also have the same name.

FirstMondayInMay · 28/06/2023 20:51

Yes! A close friend of mine is a few weeks in front of me and is constantly asking me if I’ve thought of anymore names yet, then says she likes names I’ve previously mentioned to her. So once I’ve decided on names I won’t be telling her😅

Bluebelles23 · 28/06/2023 16:47

I think it really depends on how similar the name is.
If it was the other way around and you had your baby first and named it and then she named hers a similar name would you be annoyed?
It would be kind of strange which you must realise or you wouldn't have posted here, but she may not care

I genuinely don't think I'd be annoyed had it have been the other way round and we'd had our baby first, I think I might also see the funny/cute side of it. But I think I'm feeling emotional (pregnancy hormones) and just wanted to get some outside opinion. We've not told anyone our name choice, so I can't check it with other friends to see what they would do. The responses above have given me perspective that it may be absolutely fine and maybe I'm just being overly worried 😌

I’d stick with the name. I have cousins with the exact same first name no one cares
