Hi

DH and I both like name Rebecca but I am wondering, is it very common for all Rebecca's to be called Becky or Becca? I'm not a fan of the latter two and not sure I'd call the baby Rebecca if the likelihood is the name will be shortened.

OP posts:

I’m fascinated by Rebeccas being called Rachel!? They’re not even remotely similar, how can people get this so wrong? How annoying for you all!

But people do regard Rachel and Rebecca as similar names, as discussed
earlier in the thread.

I like Rebecca, but (this is going to be unpopular on here...) I think Rachel is actually a little nicer.

Rockschooldropout · 01/07/2023 23:22

I have a Rebecca in her early thirties - she’s been Bex ever since primary school

TheMarzipanDildo · 01/07/2023 23:20

Obviously it’s still annoying when people get it wrong!

To be fair

  1. They both start with an R
  2. They are both biblical
  3. They are both classic, popular, solid names

I have a primary school aged Rebecca. She loves her name. She loves that she is yet to meet another Rebecca either at her school or elsewhere but her name is not so uncommon that people haven't heard of it or can't spell it.

She is only sometimes Bex to her closest friends but always Rebecca at home and elsewhere.

On a few occasions, people I don't know that well misremember her name as Rachel... I always thought it was weird... and so I'm strangely comforted that this happens to other Rebeccas!

thatsnotmyna · 01/07/2023 22:42

Oh and yes I've also been called Rachel and also Jessica!

thatsnotmyna · 01/07/2023 22:42

I'm a Rebecca (NC) and was fine with it as a child until people started calling me Becky and I really didn't like it... I think I was 6-7 years old at the time. When I went to secondary school kids called me Becky constantly.

I had to put up with it and now I tend to call myself it. In all honesty I'm not a fan of the name, and can't stand Becky. But i pretty much get called it by everyone... apart from DH, he calls me Darling because weirdly he's never called me Becky and only calls me Rebecca in front of my parents 😂

If I met a baby Rebecca I'd still think it was sweet. I'm kind of pleased people like the name on here. I always wished I'd been called Katie though.

Newgirls · 01/07/2023 22:39

I really like the name becky - I only know a couple and they are great so good associations? Rebecca very nice too

Topseyt123 · 01/07/2023 22:29

As far as I know my Rebecca has never been called Rachel. I think she would be very 🤔if someone tried that and would be likely to correct them. She's in her twenties now.

Topseyt123 · 01/07/2023 22:26

I have a Rebecca. She is mostly known as Becky, Beck, Becs, including by us.

It doesn't bother me at all. I deliberately chose names where the long and short forms were acceptable to us.

FoldenHoard · 01/07/2023 22:25

And God yes to being called Rachel!

FoldenHoard · 01/07/2023 22:24

I’m a Rebecca. I’m always called Becca or Bec, even though I always introduce myself as Rebecca. I draw the line at Becky though, or Becs 😣

swirly3468 · 01/07/2023 22:16

Love the name. It's my mums name 😄

CautiousOptimist · 01/07/2023 22:15

I am a Rebecca too, loads from my birth year, 1982!
I've always been Becky, Becks to family, and I love my name, especially now my married surname also starts with a B!
WHAT is with the Rachel thing? All the bloody time!

Skinnydecafflatte · 01/07/2023 21:33

Love the name! 🥰 perhaps biased as my daughter (8) is Rebecca. Her brother, dh and a couple of family friends call her Becca but otherwise she’s Rebecca or Boo (didn’t realise how popular that was as a nickname!) I love Rebekah but we have a surname that always needs to be spelt out so kept with the more common version.

NoYouCannot · 01/07/2023 21:16

My best friend is called Rebecca. Everyone calls her Becky. She really likes her name Rebecca, but she has been called posh by some relatives for wanting to be called by her full name. She was also in a work situation where she was visiting a different office and when she introduced herself the person she introduced herself to refused to call her Rebecca because they said it was too formal for their office, so called her Becky instead!

Snugglemonkey · 01/07/2023 21:08

I know a Reby. Though she is Rebecca at work.

MWNA · 01/07/2023 21:04

I'm Rebecca. I get called Bec by everyone and have since childhood.
I love my name.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 01/07/2023 21:00

Love Rebecca but hate Becky so it's a no from me (I've never met a child who hasn't been called Becky once they start school)

BeckyWithTheGoodHair010101 · 01/07/2023 20:36

😭😭😭

I'm a Rebecca and have been Becky since I started school, my choice. I also get called Becca, Becs, Bec and Bex.

shakespearetower · 01/07/2023 20:27

One of my closest friends is called Rebecca. For the most part, everyone calls her by her full name, although RB is allowed. Becca and Becky? Absolutely not!

I have a three syllable name, one with quite a few nicknames but have only ever been called by my full name. My mother was very clear with teachers and everyone really that my name was not to be shortened or nicknames used.

Makinglists · 01/07/2023 20:13

I'm one - at primary school the headmaster insisted on calling me Rachel and wondered why I never responded!
I like my name it's timeless - I've never thought 'I wish I was called...'

Roselilly36 · 01/07/2023 20:11

Gorgeous, classic name. Most Rebecca’s I know shorten the name. It’s a shame as Rebecca is such a beautiful name.

MayBe6 · 01/07/2023 20:09

My daughter is a Rebekah, she is 12 now. We shorten it to Bex or Becka she likes either one, she’s really proud of the spelling of her name too! We had a long list of names ready when she was born, and when I saw her face I said ‘she’s a Rebekah’ and that was that!
