We love Eleanor… BUT….

…. My mum HATES it. Which makes it lose its shine a bit.

If we love Eleanor, what names of a similar fashion would you suggest?

No middle name, 2 syllable surname beginning with S.

Thank you!

Eleanor is a great name, regardless of what your mum thinks. Names of a similar ilk include Imogen, Harriet, Naomi, Madeleine.

sleepymama3 · 18/06/2023 20:37

If she's that triggered by a name, let her take the money she's spending on your hair and spend it on therapy. 🙄and if you do choose a different name, don't ask, just use. Your baby, your name choice.
I always liked Elinor (long or ie. more) but that's splitting hairs a bit.
Leonie/ Leona or Theodora have a similar vibe but I hope you keep Eleanor in mind if you really like it.

JC89 · 18/06/2023 19:08

Eleanora?

WarmWinterSun · 18/06/2023 19:01

Ignore your mum. It’s a gorgeous name.

AlbertaWildRose · 18/06/2023 19:00

It is not up to your mum what you name YOUR child. As others have said, she had her chance when she had her own children - this is your chance! Don't let her bully you away from a name you and your DH both love. This is exactly why people should never discuss name possibilities, and just tell everyone what the baby's name is after they're born.

She said it’s boring but also reminds her of the bully at school!! Mum suggested Giovanna, Temperance and Clementine. Although she does like some other names that aren’t too unusual such as Darcey and Penny.

Well Eleanor is a far, far nicer name than any of your Mum’s choices ! Just use Eleanor, it is lovely, your Mum will get used to it.

I had a hair cut 😭

No wonder she keeps bossing you around. You keep letting her.

Indigodreaming · 18/06/2023 18:54

oh no, you didn't!!

Or Isabelle!

OopsieeDaisy · 14/06/2023 10:18

You should definitely go with a name you love regardless of whether other people like it. We deliberately didn’t tell anyone our child’s name until after they were born and I’m sure not everyone loves the name as much as we do but we don’t care!
If you did want to consider others, Harriet, Rebecca or Francesca are nice with a similar feel.

user1492757084 · 14/06/2023 03:27

Eleanor is lovely. Allow your mother to call her a nick name of Eleanor or her middle name.
Your daughter will shine bright over the memory of the bully and put that terrible association to bed soon anyway.

Tell your mother that the bully did not choose her own name and that the name was not the problem but the behaviour.

ObviouslyNameChanged99 · 11/06/2023 22:25

Anyway I like Eleanor but prefer it pronounced Ellen-ah as opposed to Ellen-nore.

Just my opinion.

Pick the name you like and sod your mum, is what I think.

ObviouslyNameChanged99 · 11/06/2023 22:22

When our youngest was born my DH and I couldn't decide between 2 names. DH's grandparents came and visited when he was about 6 days old and we told them the 2 names, let's say they were Stuart and Dylan. They both said Stuart's okay but Dylan's a bit weird. Within an hour of them leaving we decided we loved Dylan!! 🤣🤣🤣

I love weird so that made me like it more. 🤣

arlequin · 11/06/2023 20:27

Your mum's name choices are horrendous!!

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 11/06/2023 20:01

I am sure that you love your mum, OP, but she sounds like a bloody nightmare. Are you honestly going to give her more influence over your child’s name than her father?

MadelineZott · 11/06/2023 18:28

I wanted Eleanor, nn Ella, but my then DP said "she'll get called Ella the Elephant" and vetoed it.

OP: Go for it. You both like it and it will be good for your mum to be able to have a pleasant association with the name.

Pumpkinspicedmum · 11/06/2023 18:23

I have a relative called Eleanor and she gets called either Nelly or Nella 🥰 I think all three are lovely xx

BelindaBears · 11/06/2023 18:23

I have no idea if my mum hates my DD’s name because I didn’t tell anyone what it was until after she was born. Nothing wrong with the name Eleanor, use it if you still like it! If she’s suggesting Temperance her tastes are…interesting.

NSJ28 · 11/06/2023 18:21

I'm 33 weeks pregnant and calling our daughter Ellia :)

Yeah… 😬
Ignore her and go with Eleanor.

Comedycook · 11/06/2023 18:14

This is so sad. Its YOUR child. Call her what you want... seriously. Your mum has had her children and named them. Its your time now.

berksandbeyond · 11/06/2023 18:12

I had this with my mum too. She thought the name was too posh. We named DD it anyway, and I’ve only ever had compliments, I still love it nearly 5 years later

Upanddownthemerrygoround · 11/06/2023 18:11

Why on earth does your mum have a say over your wedding dress, your children’s names, your hair cut?

call her Eleanor. Your DH needs to feel you’ve got his back over your mum’s.

(which I love, and I’d put Harriet, Isabelle and Abigail in similar boxes)
