Evangelia - nn help!

Goldblend · 09/06/2023 12:43

Our DD will be named Evangelia for family reasons. I know it’s a long , non British name and so I need help!

I want a nice nn that could work with Evangelia as a full name but not an Eve, Evie, Eva etc. as they are all so overused.

I am also not a fan of Angie, Angela, Angelina, Lina, Lia!

Would Lily work?

The letter of Evangelia I like are E-A-N-L-I !

I need some inspiration please!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Velvian · 10/06/2023 07:44

That's not true @Wolfiefan . For DD, we said in birth announcement (not real name) 'This is Katherine May Brown ("Kitty" )'. We did this so that people wouldn't start to call her Kate, Katie, Cathy...

She is 'Kitty' to everyone and always has been.

Wolfiefan · 10/06/2023 07:06

You don’t get to decide what shortened version of a name you adopt once a child starts school. Don’t like the full name then don’t use it. If people bully you over that then go NC. Put you and your child first.

Velvian · 10/06/2023 07:02

If you don't like the name, can you use as a middle name or use a similar name, like:
Evangeline, Angela, Angelina, Angelica.

How about Anya or Anna as a NN.

NeverendingCircus · 10/06/2023 06:51

Lia is beautiful
Vani is pretty or Vania
Gia is nice

I'd go for Lia - love that name. (I also like Eva but it is very popular

I'd just see what naturally happens. Nick names aren't predecided or forced, they're an evolving thing.

Normally I'd agree with this, but OP has been bullied into giving her baby a name she doesn't like and wants a NN to use from the outset.

user1492757084 · 10/06/2023 05:37

I like Vania, Vangie, Vangel, Ellie, Vellie and Gelli.
You could also call her a nick name from her initials or her second name. ie:
Evangelia Mary - Emmy, Eva May, Mary, Molly
Evangelia Nancy - Vancy, Nan
Evangelia Sarah - Essie, Sarah
Evangelia Rachael- Rach, Evra
Evangelia Rose - Rosee
Evangelia Catherine - Evercat, Catie, Angelcat
Evangelia Beatrix - Etrix, Trixie

Fivebeanchilli · 09/06/2023 23:01

I'd go for Vani.
I work with one (full name not Evangelia) and I think it's a pretty name.

WaterBaby9 · 09/06/2023 23:00

I think nicknames jusy evolve naturally and cant be planned tbh. My sons couldnt be further from his name and has no association, like lots of people i know. A nickname will just come or not come?

Bagofmaltesers · 09/06/2023 22:47

Evvi
Lia
I think the NN needs to be clearly derived from the actual name.

briansgardenshed · 09/06/2023 22:41

Eva (with an E as in egg) , I know two, (Polish parents) or Evvie ( or even Effie at a stretch)
Vanna

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 09/06/2023 22:27

Or Evvy. We have one in our school, I think it’s cute. No idea what it’s short for, if anything - I’d probably assume Evelyn.

ImNotAsThinkAsYouDrunkIAm · 09/06/2023 22:25

If you go with Eva it will be pronounced Eeva, and she’ll still end up correcting everyone. What are you trying to achieve with the nickname? Something you prefer, or something that won’t be constantly mispronounced? Or both?

If you want something ‘logical’ but ‘easy’, how about Ava? Not as overused as Eva, Evie etc, and pronounced correctly for
her actual name, even if the spelling is incongruent with her full name.

OliviaFlaversham · 09/06/2023 22:22

If there are people horrid enough to bully you over a name, they’re likely to give the ‘rightly named’ one preferential treatment.

Eva (with the Eh sound) is nice but I absolutely think you should not burden your daughter with this tradition.

MadeFrom100percentPears · 09/06/2023 22:10

I like Vanna or Vee.

mayorofcasterbridge · 09/06/2023 22:03

If you already get a hard time over your elder child's name, tbh I would just say, "fuck it!" and choose a name you love.

Quornflakegirl · 09/06/2023 21:46

I considered this name for one of my DD with a nickname of Effie.

My sister chose not to follow this custom with her first born ds and she still has a hard time about it 10 years later.

continentallentil · 09/06/2023 21:29

LadyBird1973 · 09/06/2023 20:56

The other thing to consider is that nicknames evolve naturally and you will have very little control over what her friends call her at school or what she prefers herself. I think she'll end up being known as Evie.

This is likely

if you don’t want that can you use it as a middle name instead?

continentallentil · 09/06/2023 21:29

Annie
Vannie
Lia

FindingTheFox · 09/06/2023 16:56

Lia, pronounced Leah

DesteB · 09/06/2023 16:53

What about Leah

Festivfrenzy · 09/06/2023 16:51

Or Elia if you wanted another syllable and Ellie as nn?

Festivfrenzy · 09/06/2023 16:50

Goldblend · 09/06/2023 16:13

I just thought of Ellie because someone in the very first posts suggested it…

Ellie is perfect- not many of them around, easy to pronounce for everyone and all nationalities, clearly stems from Evang-Ellie-a
Go with that!
Otherwise I know a couple of people called "V" (Vee) which is really nice.

Dazedandbemused0 · 09/06/2023 16:47

I think you should just choose a new name. Think of your child! What lesson are you teaching them!l? I lumbered you with a name that even I hate because I was easily bullied by my family?! Why not teach them to stand up for themselves? Evangelia is very odd and awkward sounding and none of the names you want work as nicknames. You’re basically naming your child one thing and giving her an entirely separate name as a nickname because you hate the name you chose for her before she’s even born?!
