Baby girl is due in the next couple of weeks, and names are still swirling around and favourites changing every couple of days..

For context she’s half-Irish and has an older sister called Indigo (Indi). We like flowing names, nature names (not absurd ones), names that can be shortened.. Can’t start with a hard C sound cos surname does.

Recently:

Alannah, probably known as Lana/Lanah

Amber, possible nickname Bea (from Bambi which is what I end up calling a little Amber we know)

Today’s newcomer, Eleni known as Leni (can’t have nn Ellie)

She was Jasmine for ages, originally an honour name for a friend but then we really liked it, now I think it’s a bit princessy (husband has no Aladdin connotations but I do!)

Also Rosie short for Róisín has been on the table, but again potentially a bit floral and just not ‘strong’ enough.

Opinions and suggestions gratefully received! Thank you :-)

Your names include myself and two of my sisters! Alannah is one but spelt Alana and she’s always been Lana or Larn to us! The worst of the insults is banana, not so bad! I personally love it and it remains unusual.

how about Eleyna, Juniper or Tasmin?

I would say don't pick any name that has a nickname that they "can't" have (for instance Ellie from Eleni) or that has a nn that you're really really set on because kids often end up with a nickname you weren't expecting, especially once they get to school. My DD15 is a Freya, Frey is the obvious nickname no? She gets known as Ya. No idea. Teenagers are weird.

I actually really like Jasmine. Maybe a more earthy, woody plant name like Rowan or Willow?

Rosie is very popular. Roisin and Roise nice but pronunciation and spelling issues.
Amber is ok but Bea doesn't strike me as a 'nn'. Bambi is too Disney.
Eleni - OK but pronunciation issues and lots of 'Are you Greek?'

Jasmine is nice. Yasmin as an alternative?
Veronica nn Roni?

What about Róise (Roh-shuh) ? Short/alternative for Roisin

Yes, I was just going to suggest this.

Hazel another option, maybe.

Midnightpony · 07/06/2023 11:47

Sorry, it's Róise (ROW - shuh) same initial sound as Roisin. Row as in row your boat

WetBandits · 07/06/2023 11:47

Nice enough but not as strong as Indigo.

My first thought was Celeste!

Delphigirl · 07/06/2023 11:47

I totally think Virginia is due a comeback…

ThatFraggle · 07/06/2023 11:46

And alliteration in names is not a terrible thing.
