Could you use Pearl if your surname starts with an ‘alla…’ sound? Pearl Allaway, for example?

Agree with this.

Yes too many Ls.
Really dislike Pearl. Makes me think old lady and lavender scent. Sorry!!

Nebula277 · 06/06/2023 16:45

yep I know - I work in health care

was quoting poster on page 2

SirChenjins · 06/06/2023 13:41

Why must they be ‘a geriatric’?

We tend to say ‘older person’ now btw, geriatrics typically refers to a branch of medicine.

Nebula277 · 06/06/2023 12:30

Pearl is a gorgeous name, and trendy in London - anyone who says it’s an old lady name must be a geriatric themselves…

cassiatwenty · 02/06/2023 20:03

Many people use the term pearl clutching on MN as if being in shock. Obviously that refers to clutching onto your jewellery when watching upper class series like Emmerdale

IWonderWhereThatDishDidGo · 02/06/2023 18:53

Sounds awful when I say it out loud, but it might be my accent (NI)!

BriarHare · 02/06/2023 18:51

Pearl is awful! It’s a real Maureen/Doreen/Doris type of name.

Plus, it will always be at risk of semen jokes.

imip · 02/06/2023 18:48

My D is a Pearl with a surname with lots of Ls. V similar to what you suggest and it sounds lovely. It rolls together, but it doesn’t start with an A and it breaks up the flow of the name, if that makes sense.

I don’t understand? What’s wrong with pearl necklaces?

Pearl necklace is a term for a man ejaculating over a woman’s neck after a sexual experience involving the breasts

For a geriatric!

Don't be mean tut tut 🧐

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/06/2023 18:27

@Dazedandbemused0 "Pearl necklace" has a similar slang meaning to "Pearl jam".

lovelysummersky · 02/06/2023 18:19

Yes. We love Pearl too, it's so pretty.

EggInANest · 02/06/2023 17:50

Too many Ls, too tongue twistery.

NeverendingCircus · 02/06/2023 17:47

I adore the name Pearl but it doesn't fit easily with a surname starting with 'Alla'.It's fine if people enunciate properly but I can imagine it being run on to sound like 'puh-lallaway'

I wouldn't rule it out completely but you could probably find a name you like equally which flows better.

Divebar2021 · 02/06/2023 17:37

Agreed. Cora is lovely too

beeskipa · 02/06/2023 17:13

I love the name Pearl and think it works fine in that context!

I had great aunts called Cora and Pearl, always thought they were both such lovely names and due a comeback.

Dazedandbemused0 · 02/06/2023 16:57

SirChenjins · 02/06/2023 13:37

It always makes me think of pearl necklace - not something I'd want for my child Sad

I don't think it goes with a surname that starts with A, the emphasis is all wrong.

I don’t understand? What’s wrong with pearl necklaces?

ourflagmeansdeath · 01/06/2023 23:13

For me it's way too tongue twistery but go for it if you really love the name.

Infusionist · 01/06/2023 04:34

I like Pearl, but there are too many Ls in Pearl Allaway. It makes the stress fall in the wrong place, so it sounds like you’re saying Per Lallaway.

Yep

Threesmycrowd · 01/06/2023 20:45

Its fine! I know a Diane Neelan which is similar in the sense that you end up saying dia neelan (per lallaway) but honestly it's absolutely fine! Hasnt been a problem for her! Go for it!

pilates · 01/06/2023 20:25

Sounds fine to me
