Hi all,

Please could you share your opinions on the Hindu, Sanskrit name Shruti for a baby girl? This name has a significant meaning in our culture.

It’s pronounced Shrew-tea.

What sort of feeling/ image does it bring up? E.g does it sound girly, sporty, playful, artsy, serious etc?

Thanks!

Wasn't this the name of one of the main characters in 'This is going to hurt'? It's a lovely name but I'd associate it with the character and things didn't end well for her.

I’ve known a Shruti and would have no problem spelling it or pronouncing it.

I think it’s fab! It sounds sweet to me, but not too cutesy for a grown capable woman.

My school friend, UK born of Asian heritage, has a daughter named Shruti. This girl is extremely clever, but also popular, and keen to help everyone, charity work etc. Therefore, to me it conjures up a clever all-rounder just because I know one girl named it!

I don't think it conveys anything negative at all, and is quite pretty

Shruti the cutie, I like it!

I like it, but I find it hard to pronounce

As a non-hindu, native English speaker, I'm afraid it associates in my mind with shrew, shrewd, shortie and inscrutable.

Sorry.

I’m familiar with the name. It doesn’t conjure up anything particularly, other than that the girls is clearly from a Hindu family. Most people will know how to pronounce it. Some will be inclined, deliberately or innocently, to say “shruh-ti”.
