Thoughts on Kasia? It’s a Polish name that comes from the Polish version of Catherine. How would you pronounce it, and where are you from?

Is a shop.

mathanxiety · 29/05/2023 16:57

YY to the 'soft SH' @mrsdarthlord

I also give an alternative name when ordering coffee, food, etc (Irish name here), but I don't think that's uncommon even among people with Anglo names. There are lots of jokes on the internet about the mangling of names by food and beverage servers (see 'My name is Ian and I hate Starbucks').

I would say ca see ah too. I wiykd be cautious giving a name to a child thst people are going to mispronounce. It will be extremely annoying.

Asterales · 29/05/2023 16:53

Kasha, but I live in Birmingham where there are lots of Katarzynas. Before I lived here I'd have guessed at "Cassia" but it's not difficult to grasp once you've been told once! It's a lovely name, go for it!

mathanxiety · 29/05/2023 16:50

Kash-uh.
I'm in the US in an area with a lot of Polish immigrants.

RunningFromInsanity · 29/05/2023 16:47

Kaz-e-uh
or
Kaz-eye-uh

but I like the pronunciation upthread of kasha (Sasha with a k)

mrsdarthlord · 29/05/2023 16:38

I’m Polish and lived in the UK for 5+ years. I have a Polish name very similar to Kasia and I always envy my partner who has a more ‘common’ English name. It makes it more difficult in a professional and social setting because people don’t know how to pronounce my name (you’d be surprised at different variations even though it’s just 2 syllables!!) and I think many people struggle to remember it when I introduce myself. Also, ‘Kasia’ should be really pronounced with a soft ‘sha’ which simply doesn’t exist in English, so your name is never pronounced as it ‘should be’. I’m not offended at all or anything like that, really doesn’t bother me, it’s just a name, but I just sometimes wish I had a more ‘common’ name :). Whenever I order food/coffee etc. I always give one of common English names to make life easier. Maybe just something to consider!

UrsulaBelle · 29/05/2023 16:21

Kash ah because I know a Polish woman with that name. I also know a very lovely Gosia pronounced Gosh ah.

KirstenBlest · 29/05/2023 16:15

Kasha. Went to school with one. UK. I think it's short for Katarzyna
Basia is Basha, and is short for Barbara

Borris · 29/05/2023 16:07

I’ve never heard it before so I’d say Cass-ee-ah. But I can see that I’m wrong

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 29/05/2023 15:57

Kasia rhymes with Sasha and is the name of one my best friends. I can tell you from her bitter experience that very few people know how to pronounce it but I love it nevertheless. I also love Zosia.

TennisWithDeborah · 29/05/2023 15:53

Kashuh - I am in the UK, watched BBC news with Kasia Madera who was particularly visible during the invasion of Ukraine last year. I recall thinking that it was a nice name!

BurscoughBooths · 29/05/2023 15:48

Kasha. There’s a Kasia living on my street, in England

SRK16 · 29/05/2023 15:47

Kash-uh. I’m British but my partner is polish with relatives with the name.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/05/2023 15:47

I'd wait for the parent/child to tell me. It's short so it's bound to be easy, even if the pronunciation isn't typically English.

It's pretty as well.

SirChenjins · 29/05/2023 15:46

Kay-shuh - like Asia but starting with a K

UK

IsItHalfTermYetHelp · 29/05/2023 15:45

I would guess either kah zee uh or kasha. Am English.

HeidiUpTheMountain · 29/05/2023 15:44

II’d say Kasha, I think. From the UK.
