Thoughts on Kasia? It’s a Polish name that comes from the Polish version of Catherine. How would you pronounce it, and where are you from?

@LosingMyPancakes sorry to hear your experience Sad so many wonderful Polish names and I hate the idea that British-Poles wouldn't go for one. DSS is called Bronisław (Bronek) and it's brill! People get used to it.

LosingMyPancakes · 30/05/2023 17:35

I think this thread demonstrates well that their name will never be pronounced properly and tbh, it should normally be Katarzyna anyway. As someone Polish that constantly spells their name out and gets endless "where's your name from? Are you from there/were you born there/family from there?" I'm personally not sure why you'd go that way and make things difficult for your child.

But spelling is Kaszka

Yes it's either Kaszka or Kaska with a dash over the s. Sz and s with a dash both make sh sound.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 30/05/2023 16:54

And it's very informal - you wouldn't call someone Kaszka (or similar super-diminutive) unless they were a child or you knew them extremely well. Pana Kasia would be okay, though

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 30/05/2023 16:53

But spelling is Kaszka

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 30/05/2023 16:51

@KirstenBlest, @Simianwalk has it! Katherine, Kate, Katie!

midnightblue12 · 29/05/2023 19:39

I read it as though Kas-E-ah!

It's lovely 🙂

mrsdarthlord · 29/05/2023 19:27

hmm, I think wouldn’t say that Kaśka (Kashka) is more a diminutive than Kasia or equivalent to Katie. It’s more of a diminutive for an adult (maybe compare it to Vincent - full name, Vince - Kaśka for an adult, Vinnie - Kasia for a child), I would never call a baby or a small child Kaśka.

DRS1970 · 29/05/2023 19:10

Sounds like next year's new Nissan range....

MoonlightLily · 29/05/2023 19:07

I know someone called this and she pronounced it as kay sha like k(asia) she wasn't polish though

KirstenBlest · 29/05/2023 19:02

@Simianwalk , thanks. Is 'Katie' Kaszka?

StillWantingADog · 29/05/2023 18:58

Kasha

but because I lived in Poland and there were loads of Kasias.

You might need to explain how it’s said but it shouldn’t cause any problems beyond that

glitterfarts · 29/05/2023 18:55

Car-shar. I'm from the antipodes. Lovely name.

Simianwalk · 29/05/2023 18:49

KirstenBlest · 29/05/2023 18:44

@SteveBuscemisRheumyEye , how is Kashka written? I know one and I think she's polish

Kashka is even more of a diminutive.
Katarzyan (but like Catherine)
Kasia (Kate)
Kashka (Katie)

KirstenBlest · 29/05/2023 18:44

@SteveBuscemisRheumyEye , how is Kashka written? I know one and I think she's polish

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 29/05/2023 18:36

I would have said Ka-see-a until I met one recently on a work call & all the colleagues were calling her Kasha.

blahblahblah1654 · 29/05/2023 18:34

My best friend from school is a Kasia, her mum is polish. It's pronounced Kasha.

WheelsUp · 29/05/2023 18:34

I would say Ka-sha

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 29/05/2023 18:33

It's lovely, but a) very common in Polish circles (if that matters to you!) and b) definitely a diminutive rather than a full name, generally.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/05/2023 18:33

Kash-uh.

Lovely girl at school with that name. I'd not come across it before, but I really like it.

SteveBuscemisRheumyEye · 29/05/2023 18:32

Kah-sha (full disclosure, DH is Polish!).

Ringmaster27 · 29/05/2023 18:28

Beautiful - it’s my aunts name 🥰 We prounounce it “Ka-Sha”

WhisperingAutistic · 29/05/2023 18:16

I'd pronounce it Kaz ee ah
I'm from Lancashire in the North West

MadEyeMoodysEye · 29/05/2023 18:08

I know one (adult), it's pronounced Kasha and is short for Katarzyna. I think it's lovely.

Theraffarian · 29/05/2023 17:09

Without the guidance above I would have said cass ee ah , as I’ve never seen/heard the name before and that would be my best shot . Mind you I make a lot of calls for work and spend half of them attempting the name and following it up with “ I’m so sorry if I mispronounced that “ .
