Hmm tricky. I’d say use Angelica if you’re British. For example I absolutely adore the name Indira but we’re white-British and it just wouldn’t seem right to use it. To each their own though x

@ymemanresu, @DrinkFeckArseGirls , she is Alicja. Everyone says Aleesha, so I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to be correcting people on the spelling and pronunciation.

ymemanresu · 27/05/2023 14:26

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 27/05/2023 11:21

Alicja - Ah-leetz-yah (sort of)

I love this!

I did actually meet a girl called 'Angel' once too.

ymemanresu · 27/05/2023 14:19

So.. OP are you going to use it? Say yes!

KirstenBlest · 27/05/2023 11:41

Thanks, @DrinkFeckArseGirls , maybe i should ask her, I thought it couldn't be Alicja because everyone calls her Aleesha . I think it might be that she accepts Aleesha.
Thinking about it, I don't recall her saying her own name.

**Didn't write Alicia because that can be Alissia

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 27/05/2023 11:21

Alicja - Ah-leetz-yah (sort of)

Swannyb · 27/05/2023 11:12

Do you like the name Alina? Easy to pronounce and spell, and very pretty! 😍

dwightschrutebeets · 27/05/2023 10:08

My daughter has a Welsh name and I get asked all the time if I'm Welsh. And been called a liar because I don't sound Welsh. I am Welsh and have a Welsh name. It gets very tiring... it's not something I'd really considered before but now I wouldn't use a name unless I had connections there

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 21:57

The Anjeleeka name needs to be written as Andżelika otherwise it is Andzeleeka, I think

My polish acquaintances say that 'there are rules but there are no rules'

How do you pronounce the 'Z' ?

You might think of the z as a modifying letter which changes how the previous letter(s) is pronounced, in a similar way to h in English (so ch, ph, sh, th are different from c, p, s, t).

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 26/05/2023 21:40

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 20:45

@MyFaceIsAnAONB , Angelica is Anj-EL-i-ca, Andżelika is Anj-el-EE-ka

Yep, as I thought. So same name but with a different accent. Like Marie in England vs Marie in France.

BananaPalm · 26/05/2023 21:40

I showed this thread to my friend and she said in Poland Andzelika spelt like this is being joked about a lot. In a sense that "your parents didn't know how to spell 'Angelica' so changed the original spelling to at least make it sound like the original name'. Dunno, I wouldn't use it 🤷🏻‍♀️ I'd go for Angelica.

TrashyPanda · 26/05/2023 21:31

I have forenames from one Western European Country and a Slavic surname.

nobody has ever suggested they don’t go together!

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 21:10

@WGACA , I thought it might be. Thanks.

I know a polish 'Aleesha' but I think it's spelt Alisza - does that look ok to you?

WGACA · 26/05/2023 21:07

Zofia = your first pronunciation. I think Zosia (Zosha is the Polish Sophie.

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 21:04

They are pretty names, @WGACA . Is Zofia ZOFE-ya or ZOFF-ee-a? I'm guessing that Zosia is Zo-sha

WGACA · 26/05/2023 20:55

I love Polish names and spellings especially Zosia and Zofia.

CountessBathorysBeautySecrets · 26/05/2023 20:53

Angelica or Angelique seem better options.

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 20:52

@lankyhanky , I'm on the side of no too.

KirstenBlest · 26/05/2023 20:45

@MyFaceIsAnAONB , Angelica is Anj-EL-i-ca, Andżelika is Anj-el-EE-ka

lankyhanky · 26/05/2023 20:43

I'm on the side of no.

People who use names from other cultures often don't pronounce it correctly. I have a foreign name due to my heritage and English people never pronounce it correctly.

You/your child will be asked whether you are Polish. I'd personally feel embarrassed to be using a name that is not part of my heritage and having to answer the question with "no my mum just thought the name sounded nice". Would you use Ling or Sven? Or do people just like to culturally appropriate and use names that "sound pretty".

Also, consider whether you're surname will go with it. Will Svetlana Thomas work? I don't think so...

CuteCillian · 26/05/2023 20:41

If you're not Polish, why would you like your kid to have a foreign name
Names travel, citizens of one country do not have a right to 'own' a name, nor would they want to I imagine.

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 26/05/2023 20:36

My kids have Hebrew, Welsh and Greek names and were as English as it gets. So I dunno. But for example I ADORE the name Omari but I would never use it for my own child. Would just seem weird.

ymemanresu · 26/05/2023 20:36

How do you pronounce the 'Z' ?

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 26/05/2023 20:35

Why not just use Angelica? I’d pronounce Andzelika pretty much the same? Maybe I’m way off.
