Today as a name. Anyone else have a guilty pleasure in out their names?

For a little girl.

I know I could never use it! It’s too out there and isn’t really a name. My DD is a Lola and I’m due another little girl soon, who I’ve decided to call Maria (H loves this name too)

But I think Today is stunning…. It’s just so refreshing.

For clarification, again, I absolutely won’t use it as I know it’ll get a low of horrible responses and we’ve settled on Maria

But just ponder the name a little and then think. It’s nice isn’t it?

My DD went to nursery with a ‘Maybe’ but it was spelt differently. It really suited her!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I met a Pebble at a job interview once. The first thing she said was to explain her name. Imagine starting every conversation like that.

I know a Pebble! Mid 20s ish. Perhaps it's the same Pebble, there can't be many out there 😆

Jesus the complications and confusions that would arise from using Today as a name. It's not haters, it's practicality. Can you really not see that?

She does say 'I know I could never use it! It’s too out there and isn’t really a name.'. She's not actually going to give a child the name Today.

when I was younger I wanted to call my hypothetical son ‘river’ 😂 what was I thinking? He’s called Philip

CountessBathorysBeautySecrets · 24/05/2023 11:58

I'm surprised at someone knowing one person called Frideswide nevermind two!

cunningartificer · 24/05/2023 11:47

I know a couple of Fridays, both shortened from Frideswide which is an old English name. Freyas can also apparently be nicknamed Friday!
I used to think Venetia would be a gorgeous girl's name (Georgette Heyer fan) but didn't use it... I know an Elektra (spelt like that) and she's amazing and suits its lively sparkle!

TrustPenguins · 24/05/2023 10:01

I like January.
Much better than May or June - though I guess it would get shortened to Jan which is not as good!
I know a 6 year old April.
I know of a Tuesday too. Slightly better than Today as a name!

My daughter has a friend called Poet. I believe it's actually her middle name but she loves it and since going to high school has gone by it. I've always been quite fond of it. That might just be because she's such a lovely, well mannered girl, she could probably be called Lucifer Morningstar and I'd be like "aye yes, lovely name for a lovely girl"

sticklaydeelove · 24/05/2023 09:57

Today? Sounds like something The Kardashians would use!

Please stop watching them immediately 😂

Chattycathydoll · 24/05/2023 09:56

I named my kid a guilty pleasure name and it ended up really suiting her Grin she’s very popular and charismatic so can get away with it. If she was shy I would have let her use her middle name but she completely fits her out-there name. Its last recorded use was about 300 years ago so not a ‘made up name’ but definitely unique.

I also like word names that sound namey but aren’t. Like Vendetta. Or Silence. But I’d never saddle a child with that! I also met someone whose legal name was Ever and thought that was pretty cool.

Pebbles Blush like the girl from flintstones. I'd never use it of course but love it!

I like it too! Probably because I think of the little girl, it just sounds CUTE and neat and round.

postwarbulge · 24/05/2023 09:43

I was just thinking of Sergeant Jos Friday pounding mean streets

Did you watch Dragnet in your youth?

Google suggests I'm about 40 years too young for that

Damnspot · 24/05/2023 08:40

I've always liked Northey. From a Mitford novel

Judgyjudgy · 24/05/2023 08:37

I think there must be some wrong with me, I'm like many of these names!! I like Summer, but I think that's probably normal-ish? I like India and China too. And Love.

TeddyBeans · 23/05/2023 10:32

I quite like Friday as a name, thanks to iron man's suit AI 🤷‍♀️ anything can be a name if you want it to be

Did you watch Dragnet in your youth?

stormelf · 24/05/2023 07:38

It does have a nice sound to it but I agree it's very unusuable as a name. I actually quite like Day by itself.
I really liked Echo while pregnant with my second child. I had a little boy instead. He does have an extremely unusual name but never had to explain it at all or had strange looks when introduced him.

Hillrunning · 24/05/2023 07:25

Interesting that you find it to be a nice name, I think the way it sounds on most people's lips isn't a pleasant sounds at all.

ShadowPuppets · 24/05/2023 07:24

Mine have rather normal names but I used to love the idea of Electra for a girl. I know the Electra complex etc etc - would never use it but I just think it’s a fab name.

whatwouldAnnaDelveydo · 24/05/2023 07:24

Idea for a girl. Would never use, of course.

I read “toady”. 🐸Soz OP 😆

ReadtheReviews · 24/05/2023 07:22

I like Holiday. Was one in a spin off from Saved by the Bell.

Rollinghill · 24/05/2023 07:21

Today surely would turn to Toady as soon as she hit school?!

IHeartGeneHunt · 24/05/2023 07:20

December, when I was about 15 I wrote a terrible James Bond esque story with a heroine called December and thought it was the most beautiful name ever! My daughter is not called December, fear not.
