Today as a name. Anyone else have a guilty pleasure in out their names?

For a little girl.

I know I could never use it! It’s too out there and isn’t really a name. My DD is a Lola and I’m due another little girl soon, who I’ve decided to call Maria (H loves this name too)

But I think Today is stunning…. It’s just so refreshing.

For clarification, again, I absolutely won’t use it as I know it’ll get a low of horrible responses and we’ve settled on Maria

But just ponder the name a little and then think. It’s nice isn’t it?

My DD went to nursery with a ‘Maybe’ but it was spelt differently. It really suited her!

How about Loveday, is a beautiful Cornish name.

toothbrusher · 24/05/2023 23:18

Today =Toadie (Rebecchi) NEIGHBOURS PUT YO HANDS UP!

pinkdelight · 24/05/2023 23:10

I once vaguely knew a girl called Loveday which is a very cool name, and it suited her. Not keen on Today though. Quite apart from the confusion it'd cause, it reminds me of the tabloid newspaper that snooker player advertised.

I really liked Salve before DD was born. We didn’t use it 😂 but I liked it. I also like Solace. Not names I’d use, but I save them in my notebook just in case I need a name for my novel characters.

Luredbyapomegranate · 24/05/2023 22:57

It’s the hormones OP.

WouldYouLikeACrabPuff · 24/05/2023 19:42

I used river for a middle name, it really suits them luckily.

I like Dixie but I think I'd use it for a dog.

ourflagmeansdeath · 24/05/2023 18:53

I really don't think Today works as a name at all, it's just TOO commonly used in daily life. Words like hope and faith can get merged in a bit. I do normally like words for names.

It does have a nice sound to it but I agree it's very unusuable as a name. I actually quite like Day by itself.
I really liked Echo while pregnant with my second child. I had a little boy instead. He does have an extremely unusual name but never had to explain it at all or had strange looks when introduced him.

I knew an Echo years ago.

I do like Holliday (with two 'L's.

Maeby (Maybe) is a character in the sitcom 'Arrested Development'

Yes, and don't forget her alter ego (for fundraising purposes) Surely 😁

Lots of cultures use ordinary words as names and English used to—just read some 16th and 17th century names for goodness sake? Praise God Barebone being a famous one. Some African naming conventions include the day of the week. Chinese and Korean naming styles use ordinary words with carefully chosen sounds or meanings to build connections within and between generations or to serve as a wish for the child.

To quote the much missed Terry Pratchett:

"There’d be a Chlamydia Weaver toddling around today if her mother hadn’t suddenly decided Sally was easier to spell."

TheYearOfSmallThings · 24/05/2023 12:43

I don't think Today works as a name, but I do have a weakness for names like Opal and Emerald and Misty, so I can't really criticise.

CountessBathorysBeautySecrets · 24/05/2023 12:42

I think Segue for a boy and Gauzy for a girl.

MoonsHaunted · 24/05/2023 12:32

Oh and I forgot to add my own guilty pleasure name - Sunset. For a boy or a girl.

Ruined by that stupid reality programme called “Selling Sunset” 😤

sticklaydeelove · 24/05/2023 12:31

Heisenberg.

underneaththeash · 24/05/2023 12:28

Today would be a pain to have as a name.
I can imagine the conversation
Person 1: ’can I have you name please’
Person 2 ’Today’
person 1: ‘yes, today’ (other person assuming they’re taking the mick.
‘My name is today’
’Oh’

it also looks a bit like ‘Toady’

DogInATent · 24/05/2023 12:21

Bestiality Carter, from the Pratchett novels...

Babdoc · 24/05/2023 12:20

DH and I used to drive past a road sign for Stenton and Garvald, when travelling south down the A1 to visit relatives in England. We often joked we’d name our first son Stenton Garvald, but luckily had two DDs.
I also think some diseases sound nice as girls’ names, but would never dream of using them - such as Chlamydia, Rubella, Scarlatina, Cholera…!

MonumentalLentil · 24/05/2023 12:19

How about Monthly?
Or is that too silly (as well)?

WildCherryBlossom · 24/05/2023 12:16

I picture Today in the font of the now defunct Today newspaper. I'm showing my age. Grin

I know a Tuesday and I surprise myself with how much I like that (although I have never dared ask if she was born on a Tuesday as I suspect she gets that all the time!). Tuesday is somehow much prettier than Today.

DogInATent · 24/05/2023 12:13

This thread has reminded me of April Wednesday, a character from an Alistair MacLean novel I read over 30 years ago!

How about TODAY() just to cause confusion in future spreadsheets?

(for people interested in this sort of thing, the story of the THAT COMPANY WHOSE NAME USED TO CONTAIN HTML SCRIPT TAGS LTD is interesting)

School nickname would definitely be Toady.

Jesus the complications and confusions that would arise from using Today as a name. It's not haters, it's practicality. Can you really not see that?

Well yes, OP can see that which is why she’s using Maria.

When I was pregnant my bump was called Blossom, we didn’t use it for dd though as it seemed too much.
