Family drama over a name

So my sister is about 10 weeks ahead of me and has found out what she is having. She's having a boy and picked her name which is lovely. We haven't found out and have our boys name and struggled for a girls name, I mentioned I'd like to use my grannys name as a first name and she has went MAD saying that's her girls name and she wants to use it in the future blah blah. Baring in mind she is currently single so I'm not sure who to or when her future babies will appear. I was really close to my granny and spent a lot of time with her when my papa died. My sister didn't even visit or go to her funeral after she died! So I'm a bit like wtf it's not even a name set in stone just a name brought up in conversation but I'm a bit of an arse myself and it makes me want to use it even more now lol!!!!

Both use the name if you both have girls.
cousins with the same name especially honouring family members really is no problem

Iyiyiiii · 19/05/2023 11:34

I'm not sure either of you is old enough to have dc....?

Use whatever name you want - disengage from the drama

DustyLee123 · 19/05/2023 10:54

She doesn’t own the name ! This is why you should never discuss names with anyone other than your partner.

SilentParrot · 19/05/2023 10:52

HeddaGarbled · 18/05/2023 22:42

Don’t use it. Children should have their own names not the names of dead relatives. Use it as a middle name if you absolutely must.

In terms of using dead relatives' names the only time I'd think it not a great idea is if there was a lot of tragedy around the relative's death. That can carry too much baggage. But a lovely granny who passed away peacefully in old age? That's perfectly fine to use.

ErrolTheDragon · 19/05/2023 10:45

She's being ridiculous. Of course it's not 'her' girls name for a theoretical future child.
In any case, there's no law against cousins having the same name - in our family each of the 4 sets had a John, one went by his middle name but that wasn't to avoid a clash.

SilentParrot · 19/05/2023 10:33

You can your granny's name and she can use granny's name too if she ever has a daughter. You both have equal dibs and anyone who chooses to get in a strop over it needs to be dunked in a well to cool down.

Sisters are so dramatic.

NoSquirrels · 19/05/2023 10:02

Pfft. Ignore! Then do whatever you’d like to do.

Twazique · 19/05/2023 10:00

I would tell her a few 'perfect' fake names that you love and adore and distract her from names you really like. Bonus points if she uses a distraction name to spite you!

DrMarciaFieldstone · 19/05/2023 06:33

Naming babies after people is fine. Reserving names isn’t

RaisinsAreTheWorkOfTheDevil · 19/05/2023 06:32

Use it.
She sounds like my sister, a princess. She probably only wants to reserve it for herself because you suggested it. I would bet money that it hadn’t even crossed her mind until you suggested your Granny’s name.

GoodChat · 19/05/2023 06:31

Stop discussing names with her.

When the baby is born, it might be a girl. Then you can use it.

She might never have a girl. She can't reserve a name for a non-existent baby.

LittleBumblebee3 · 19/05/2023 06:23

Stop discussing names with her and use the name you want to use @MissMoodyMoo

@HeddaGarbled this is a load of nonsense!! Naming after family (living or dead) is a really lovely gesture in a situation where someone has meant a lot to you! Whether that’s first names or middle names! My son has my grandfathers name as his middle name. My grandparents were my best friends and the biggest influence in my life. Taking my son to meet my grandfather the morning after he was born and seeing how happy he was when I told him DSs name is a memory I will cherish forever.

user1492757084 · 19/05/2023 06:08

Stop discussing names and compliment her on her choice for her son.
Keep your names close,do not share your ideas, and use the Granny's name if it is still your fave.
Your sister will be busy with her little boy.

Whataretheodds · 18/05/2023 22:57

Stop discussing names with her. If you have a girl, use the name you want to use.

Pallisers · 18/05/2023 22:53

don't bother arguing. Use the name when your baby is born if it is a girl. Stay away from the drama. You can't call dibs on a name.

My sister called her first son after my dad. If I had had a second son, I would have done the same.

Topseyt123 · 18/05/2023 22:51

HeddaGarbled · 18/05/2023 22:42

Bollocks. Loads of children are named in honour of a family member, whether dead or still living.

My DD1 is named after my maternal grandmother, who had died at the age of 91 just as I found myself pregnant with DD.

It is still DD's name and is great on her.

Topseyt123 · 18/05/2023 22:46

Use the name if you have a girl. Ignore her protests and just don't engage.

Nobody gets to reserve a name for a baby which may never be born. That is just ridiculous.

HeddaGarbled · 18/05/2023 22:42

Don’t use it. Children should have their own names not the names of dead relatives. Use it as a middle name if you absolutely must.

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/05/2023 22:37

Use it.

But don’t feed the drama, just announce it when your child is born.

Flufs · 18/05/2023 20:57

Use the names you want to use, ignore her

ourflagmeansdeath · 18/05/2023 20:57

Don't engage but if you have a girl do use it. It's a lovely way to honour your granny. Obviously you may have a son anyway but just ignore her tbh

fajitaaa · 18/05/2023 20:56

Whichever baby is first gets the name.

RoamingToaster · 18/05/2023 20:54

Like others say I wouldn't engage. Maybe you'll have a son too. Try not to bring it up and don't make any promises to her. Try not to let it cloud your judgment. Use it if you truly want to but not to piss her off.

SMabbutt · 18/05/2023 20:19

You could throw it back. Actually I should be mad that you want to use my baby girl name when you know how close I was with Granny. I can't believe you want to take that option away from me when she meant so much to me. It's just a nice name to you so why can't you just accept I have the same right to chose any name I like. I won't veto your choices and you can't veto mine.

Or on the other hand it's probably best to just ignore her. Don't engage particularly as you don't even know if you would use the name. If you do use it and she has a hissy fit she'll just look silly.

BumpyaDaisyevna · 18/05/2023 19:35

So your sister wants to reserve a girls name for baby girl who may never come into existence?
