My husband and I both really like this name. My hesitation is that people might pick up on the 'ass' sound in it, particularly kids at school. I also recently found out the german word "arschtritt" which means 'kick up the backside' and sounds almost identical when said out loud 🙈 I don't think that would affect her really but it's giving me pause. Am I overthinking?

Love that name.
It's not pronounced AAstrid rather asTRID, so I can't see how ass comes to mind.

I love it, it was firmly on my list for both DDs, now planning on using it for a dog when DH eventually allows us to get one 🤭

I knew an Astrid when I was growing up and never thought of "ass".

Though perhaps it's something that once you've heard it you can't un-hear it.

There's a 2 year old Astrid in my son's little gym class. It's lovely.

Yes, the 'ass' sound is my main association with this name.

It usually gets a good reception on Mumsnet though. People who love Margot but think it's too popular now go for Astrid.

Astrid has a very unpleasant sound. The ass part doesn't help but it also makes me think of astringent. I'm not a fan.

I love it- really strong and different from all the Eve/Evie/Eva/Sophie/Sophia/Sofia names. that are so commonly used at the moment.

I’m a big US Office fan so got the Ass Turd reference, but it’s not the first thing that springs to mind when I hear it.

I know a really lovely, strong, independent lady called Astrid. I would definitely use that name.

I don’t think that your daughter will have many Office fans in her class / peer group.

I didn't know about the thing from the Office because I don't watch it 🙈 but I don't think it's going to put me off the name

My Astrid is 5, the 'ass' thing hasn't come up and I doubt it will - 'ass' isn't used that much in the UK, that's more of an American thing. The only issue we have with her name is that she is blue eyed and blonde so some people assume we have scandi heritage and seem disappointed when I say nope just UK and Irish.

DD2 is Astrid. We live in Norway so it is pronounced without the the "d" on the end. Solid name (but I'm obviously biased!)

My sister is called Astrid. She's 28. I've just asked her if anyone has ever called her anything "ass" related, and she said no. She seemed really surprised that I'd asked!

I'm also a TA - if kids want to pick on child, they'll find something regardless of their name.

My friend recently named her daughter Astrid - I didn't think anything about the 'ass' sound. Just that it is a nice name. She is also Scandinavian so it's a nice nod to her heritage.
