I wouldn’t worry about Aryan. My first initial is A and at one point my surname was Ryan. My employer at the time gave me the email aryan@…. I didn’t even notice it until someone pointed it out to me. As far as I know, just that one person noticed.

i agree with others in that I prefer Aria or Anya.

narrichi · 17/05/2023 08:51

I like it though I prefer the Aria spelling (unless they're meant to be pronounced differently? I haven't seen the TV show much so I didn't notice any difference).

The "Aryan" thing didn't even occur to me. It's a very different pronunciation anyway and primary-aged children aren't going to know that word.

BlanketsCot · 16/05/2023 22:39

Don't know GoT but like Aria. I wouldn't spell Arya, I think it tips the name from pretty into try hard/made up.

There is one in DDs class so not too unusual, not too common either in my experience.

I like it but would spell it Aria.

Not keen on the game of thrones “Ar-ya” pronunciation.

Funny story to that.
Cat Starks actor is Scottish and so she said it like that.
It's supposed to sound the same as Aria but she was the first to say it in the series when she shouts it...and so it was.

There's an interview where Masie Williams explains it.

Arwen is from LOTR, @Fiddlerdragon . It's not a Welsh name.

It is a Welsh name.
Male version is Arwyn.

tonkywonky · 16/05/2023 20:38

Well Arya or not?

Hazelnuttella · 16/05/2023 20:17

MadEyeMoodysEye · 16/05/2023 20:13

I know 2 girls and 1 boy named Arya, I think it's lovely.

eatdrinkandbemerry · 16/05/2023 20:08

Like it but there is a lot lately

Giselletheunicorn · 16/05/2023 18:15

Too GoT for me. Prefer Anya.

kitsuneghost · 16/05/2023 18:13

I love it. And peak GOT was years ago so probably not as common now on terms of numbers in her class

ourflagmeansdeath · 16/05/2023 18:06

I love it, it's absolutely gorgeous. I prefer this spelling to Aria by a little but they're both lovely either way. I know quite a few but none are due to GOT but because it's a popular name in South Asia as it's a Sanskrit origin.

Yep @Fiddlerdragon & few people seem to realise GoT were a set of books long before the TV series was made.
I'm named after a character in a well-known book, yet because it's considered a classic no-one has the vapours over it.

It’s annoying what names people get funny over, when others are fine but they’ve come from the same sort of thing. I’m Welsh and I’ve always wanted a little girl called Arwen. Unfortunately the first of the lord of the rings movies came out just before she was born, and I decided to swerve it as all I’d get was ‘you named her after the elf’? Funnily enough I read the books back in the 80’s, 30 years before she was born, and I did also read the first 2 or 3 game of thrones books before the series started 🤷🏼‍♀️

DuchessOfSausage · 16/05/2023 10:35

Aryan - Nazi connotations.
The Aria spelling is more usual. Pronounced ARE-ya, or ARE-ee-a, not like Maria

Like the name Wendy came from Peter Pan.
Vanessa and Pamela also came from books.

SourDoughToast · 15/05/2023 20:30

Not for me - sounds too much like Aryan (Nazi connotations)

I know a few little Aryans - pronounced Aahr-yun. It’s a Muslim name.

If I saw Aryan written down I would assume it was that name, and not Nazi related.

OP, how are you pronouncing? Aahr-yuh, or Aria?

GoT had some great names 😊

Flufs · 15/05/2023 23:07

I like Oriel

Fiddlerdragon · 15/05/2023 21:37

Olivia or Oliver 🙄

Fiddlerdragon · 15/05/2023 21:36

I like it, heard it from GOT but don’t know anyone who is called it. I think you get a lot of snobby comments on threads like these when a name has come from a character, with people like pp who say things like ‘OMG I KNOW SO MANY’!! I bet you actually don’t. I’ve googled it out of interest and it’s something like the 146th most popular name in the uk. It’s not like Olivia or Olivia where theres likely to be one or two wherever you go.

Is Arya pronounced ar-ya. Never watched game of thrones.
I have an aria. Pronounced ar-e-a.

We pronounce it the same as you.

APurpleSquirrel · 15/05/2023 20:38

Lol - I have an Arya & yes, it was because of Game of Thrones.
No-one has every mentioned it being similar to Aryan - the pronunciation is completely different.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 15/05/2023 20:34

Prefer Aria or Anya agree about Aryan
