Pick your favourite and least favourite, please - name for our daughter

This is our list. We've worked on it quite a bit over the past couple of days and we'd like to know what you think.

We like retro-names, but you can be honest if you think they are not ready for a comeback. To us they already sound nice again.

Comment on all names are appreciated, but if you don't have much time just let us know your favourite and least favourite and tell us a bit about why you dislike or like the names.

Favourite - Jane.

Also like Mary, June, Susan and surprised myself by liking Shirley.

Least favourite - Luana/Luanna, Ava, Chloe.

If you like retro names what about Amanda, Barbara, Sylvia, Margot?

Since my name is Alan, I can't really talk, but

Beverley and Shirley are awful.

Ava - very overused, in complete contrast to the rest of your list
Susan - Susannah way nicer
May - meh
Luanna - skinny alcoholic waitress in a diner
Beverly - Everleigh way nicer
Jane - ok, bit plain
Shirley - Shirley not!
June - Juno is better
Chloe - ok, Zoe is better
Luana - see Luanna
Mary - ok I spose
Hope - ok

A name like Claire or Kate might suit, probably more due a return than some of these?

I like Hope, June, Chloe and May.

I think Shirley, Beverley, Mary, Susan and Jane are too dated and not old enough to come back in. Mary, Susan and Jane all have "plain" connotations too.

Ava is ok but boring/overused. Not keen on Luana and Luanna looks made up/you'll get the pronunciation Lou-Anna. Phonetically that's what it says.

Ava is so overused it’s dull. Especially as it’s always paired with Rose/Grace/May.

Shirley and Beverley are awful. As is Luana which seems to be some random Deep South name thrown in.

I like Chloe and Hope. Chloe was extremely popular about ten years ago or so, there’s probably a lot of teenagers with that name now.

I like Chloe, Ava, May and June. May is used a lot as a filler middle name but I actually really like it for a first name instead.

Susan- like but I’m not sure ready for comeback yet!

Luanna- quite like although sounds a bit made up
Beverly- no, dated
Jane- plain
Shirley- dated, least favourite
June- ok
Chloe- ok, becoming dated
Luana- like Luna
Mary- ok, again see Susan comment
Hope- ok

Favourites: Mary and Susan, both lovely classic names. I suppose Jane could be seen in the same light but I personally can never get past 'Plain Jane'.

I've never heard of Luana / Luanna and don't like made up names do these would be my least favourites.

I love June, Chloe, Hope.

I don't mind Ava, Mary, Shirley, May - they're good names too.

Not at all keen on Susan, Luanna, Beverly, Jane. Or Sue, Lou, Bev and Jane as they would be known.

I love Susan and Jane, classic names.
not a fan of Luana or Hope, a bit ‘out there’ for me.
I will say, there are LOTS of baby girls called Ava these days so bear that in mind.

Ava- nice but popular which would put me off but may not bother you.
Susan- don't like the nickname Sue which feels inevitable.
May- pretty but forgettable and now common as a middle name.
Luanna- don't like, feels cheep.
Beverly- don't like
Jane- dull
Shirley- don't like.
June- really pretty.

Chloe- a bit 90s, not old enough to be cool but pretty enough.
Luana- as above
Mary- cute
Hope- really pretty. I know a gorgeous 3 year old hope and a 90 year old one so it feels timeless to me.

My favourite is Susan, I think it's so sweet and definitely due a revival. Susie is adorable for a little girl.

Beverly, Shirley and Luanne are dreadful. The others are nice, though Jane is a bit colourless.
