Too little mermaid? It's a family name

OP posts:

Boys name pronounced arry-el. Quite popular and I really like it.

Tygertiger · 12/05/2023 21:59

Ariel in The Tempest is traditionally played by a male actor, so I wouldn’t use the Shakespearean connection for a girl. It’s too Disney for me.

thesilver · 12/05/2023 21:57

No! It makes me think of Ariel Castro. Before that I would have said it was a nice name.

JeanieJo · 12/05/2023 21:50

It's a lovely name.

For so many reasons

TV arial
Mermaid
Washing powded

i so love the nickname Ari though, how about

Ariana
Aria
Ariadne
?

Personally I would never associate someone named Ariel with the washing powder.
yes the Disney connection is there but there are plenty worse associations and I don’t think Ariel is a ‘princessy’ name so I think if you love it and it has personal significance then you should go for it

carly2803 · 12/05/2023 21:32

washing powder! little mermaid and that psycho on x factor

nope

PiranhaTank · 12/05/2023 21:29

Definitely too washing powdery.

MerryChristmasToYou · 12/05/2023 21:27

I know a few people called Daz

DorritLittle · 12/05/2023 21:14

Although I did think ‘washing powder’ I also thought ‘nice Shakespearean name.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 12/05/2023 21:08

Isn't it washing powder?

Feliciacat · 12/05/2023 21:07

I think people will refer to the little mermaid a lot but if you don’t mind that (and neither will your daughter, which is impossible to tell until it’s too late) then go for it. It is a nice name, especially if it’s a family one. Or could you consider Arielle or something?
