Rory for a girl

So what are peoples opinions on Rory for a girl? I really like it. We are struggling to agree on a girls name. My husband likes Ivy, Daisy, Lily and fern but think they are too cutesy and I want a strong but pretty name

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

@jenbear123 , Ina (ee-na) is not unusual in Scotland (for great-aunts) and is usually short for Jamesina or a man's name with ina added.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2023 11:13

Has anyone addressed the uncomfortable fact that we're prepared to give girls boy's names because, presumably "strong and edgy" but not prepared to give boys girl's names because.......?

You mean short for Charlotte, Francesca and Jamesina? 🤷🏻‍♀️ They're diminutives taken from longer girls names. It's not the same as calling a girl Rory (which is not a diminutive) unless it's short for Aurora.

I know a woman who is Charlee on her birth certificate, a friend of mine named her child Frankie on her birth certificate and has anyone ever met anyone named Jamesina? Rory is in popular culture as a girls name and within the generation that is currently naming children Rory is not going to be considered strange for a girl.

I love it, very different.

Name your child whatever you like, if you like the name Rory for a girl then go for it. Names like that are becoming more common for girls plus names like Charlie, Frankie and even Jamie have been used for girls for ages

I wouldn't go for it. Very much a boy name I think.

KirstenBlest · 09/05/2023 10:04

@LivingDeadGirlUK, it's definitely not Welsh.
There are similarities between Welsh and Gaelic, but the languages are cousins not sisters.
Rory is the anglicised form of Ruairí/Ruaidhrí and Ruairidh
The Welsh name Rhodri also means king

Sugarfree23 · 09/05/2023 09:11

I always thought it was a Scottish rather than Welsh name.

I do like it for a boy but I think with our surname it sounds like a cartoon character

It could be! The book I like it from uses lots of 'Y' and 'dd' in the names and places so I assumed a loose basis on welsh mythology but I think the Gaelic language has some similarities?

The world's your oyster for naming your daughter, and you want to give her a boys name.

It's the name of one of my favorite characters, I actually didn't consider it for my son because I thought people would assume we were Welsh but that doesn't seem to be an issue these days.

I'll bet the comments would be completely different if Rory was suggested for a boy.

I doubt anyone would be declaring they "love it!"
😂

’This is Rory, and here are my other 3 daughters, Kevin, Gary, and Brian.’

I keep thinking about this and bursting out laughing

Sugarfree23 · 08/05/2023 22:48

James is one of many mens names that can be a first or second name, so I'd assume any girl with a manish middle James, Peter, Martin, John / Johnson Gregor / MacGregor that it was a family surname rather than their parents choose a man's name from nowhere.

ChocoChocoLatte · 08/05/2023 22:41

:=@Sugarfree23 my Dd's name isn't James. It was just an example for the Op.

Sugarfree23 · 08/05/2023 22:22

@ChocoChocoLatte middle names can often be surnames, so hearing a name like James as a middle name I'd assume it was a family name - your maiden name or one of the Grannies maiden names.

But I wouldn't give a girl James as a first name.

Do a search there are threads with Rory and Ruairidh on them.

ChocoChocoLatte · 08/05/2023 22:04

Hello Op

I have to disagree with PPs but that's because I have a DD with a boys name. We used it as her middle name so there is no confusion on forms etc and there are no issues.

For example Caroline James Surname and call her James. (I've changed her actual names).

We have two other DC that go by shortened versions of their first names too, They all like all their names and have choices (I hated my name growing up).

We love it. She loves it. There is no issue regards gender identity or anyone believing we wanted a boy (what a lot of absolute nonsense ffs). Most forms have spaces for name and 'known as'.

Some of the issues raised here are valid regards it's meaning / more commonly used for boys etc. But they're only issues if you care. I like the meaning of all my kids names so I'm happy with them.

But then there are people on here who will argue someone 'stole' THEIR baby name and fall out with people who use similar names on their pets.

You will just never please all of the people all of the time.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Remaker · 08/05/2023 21:58

So boys’ names are ‘strong’ are they? Your DD will have more to worry about than her name if that’s your attitude. Also on what planet is Ivy cutesy? That stuff climbs vertical walls!

Rory Gilmore would have to be one of the most pathetic characters on tv so I would never name a daughter after her. She is the perfect example of someone raised to think they were special and as a result failed to develop any redeeming character traits whatsoever.

Soconfusedfords · 08/05/2023 21:56

Wow strong feelings on this one! I have a boy rory - also a GG fan - but would also have considered it had my first been a girl. It's kind of what put it on my list, and then dh also had it on his list (for a boy though). To me it's gender neutral, i guess because of GG. I've never met any girl rory's in real life, only boys.

Cas112 · 08/05/2023 21:52

My favourite name for a girl unfortunately my partner is not so keen 😞 do it OP

barca123 · 08/05/2023 21:50

Love it!

Toddlerteaplease · 08/05/2023 21:43

Hate it for a boy, such an ugly name. So even worse for a girl.
