Rory for a girl

So what are peoples opinions on Rory for a girl? I really like it. We are struggling to agree on a girls name. My husband likes Ivy, Daisy, Lily and fern but think they are too cutesy and I want a strong but pretty name

I really like it and know an adult Aurora who goes by Rori. There is a Gilmore Girls association with Rory, but that's not a bad thing imo

pippys · 21/05/2023 17:50

No it's a naughty boys name

Bunnichick · 21/05/2023 17:49

I thought about Aurora shortened to Rory. I wouldn't choose it now but I think it's fine if you like it and don't mind people assume it's after Rory in GG.

PissedOffWithDailyMail · 21/05/2023 17:45

If I heard of a child named Rory, I'd assume they were a boy.
Once I'd found out they were a girl, I'd assume that Rory was short for something else.
Once I'd found out the child was actually a girl named Rory, I'd assume the parents were Gilmore Girls fans.

I think Rory would grow up saying "I'm actually a girl" "No, it's my real name." "No, they weren't fans of the Gilmore Girls." "Yes, I'm going to change it as soon as I'm 18."

It’s a boys name , doesent work for a girl imo

Beachywave · 10/05/2023 14:42

Love it

KirstenBlest · 10/05/2023 12:54

I know a couple of families that each have a DD and DS with 'unisex' names, something along the lines of River (girl) and Riley (boy) and Blake (girl) and Eden (boy). It's confusing.

Skybluepinky · 10/05/2023 10:33

Terrible, Tiger club from Haven, and she’ll b in a class of Rory’s that are boys so will be teased that her mum and dad wanted a boy.

caringcarer · 09/05/2023 23:43

Rory is a boy's name unless Aurora.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2023 22:51

@TheBirdintheCave I knew we were agreeing! Hope you feel better soon.

TheBirdintheCave · 09/05/2023 22:41

@CurlewKate Oh! 😂 Sorry my brain is frazzled from an IVF sedation this morning.

CurlewKate · 09/05/2023 22:31

@TheBirdintheCave Absolutely. I agree! But I want someone who thinks it's fine to call a girl Donald to explain!

TheBirdintheCave · 09/05/2023 22:18

@CurlewKate Those same parents would never give a boy a girly name lest he embody those 'unsavoury' characteristics of fragility, weakness etc that they see as female which is the ultimate crime for a boy apparently!

TheBirdintheCave · 09/05/2023 22:07

@CurlewKate In short, because parents (whether they recognise it or not) think being strong and brave are male qualities so they give their daughter a boy's name as they don't think someone called Annabel could be strong and brave. Popular culture (generally American tv and film) just perpetuates this idea. 'Frilly' girls names are often given to characters who are cowardly or helpless.

Redbone · 09/05/2023 21:54

Short for Aurora yes but simply Rory absolutely no. Why give your DD a boy’s name fist to be cool?

CurlewKate · 09/05/2023 21:51

@ReadersD1gest There are loads of posts explaining why it's OK to give girls boy's names, but not OK to give boys girl's names? I really must be thicker than I thought! Could you show me one, please?

ReadersD1gest · 09/05/2023 21:42

CurlewKate · 09/05/2023 21:38

@SargentSagittarius I've scrolled through the thread and I can't find anyone addressing my point. Would you mind showing me?

There are loads 😂

Has anyone addressed the uncomfortable fact that we're prepared to give girls boy's names because, presumably "strong and edgy" but not prepared to give boys girl's names because.......?

Yes.

stillbejeweled · 09/05/2023 20:33

Love it. You could go the whole hog and give her Lorelai as a full name. Own the Gilmore love.

BlossomJill · 09/05/2023 20:26

Actually I think she spells it Rori but the pronunciation is the same

BlossomJill · 09/05/2023 20:24

I know a little girl called Rorie - it suits her to a T! I say go for it ❤️

KirstenBlest · 09/05/2023 19:14

@ididntknowthat11 , it's not discarding all names, only ones that have multiple Rs.
Quite a lot of people struggle with R, and it's not like something like Margaret or Zara where the Rs aren't as prominent.

flutterbyebaby · 09/05/2023 18:21

I've just finished a book where a fmc was called Rory
