Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

At dd2's school there's a girl called 'Golden' although dd says there's nothing whatsoever golden about her, and a boy called 'Victory'......

BroccoliSpears · 24/02/2008 21:03

I love unusual names. I also love traditional names.

I never quite understand why people chunter crossly (or worse, snigger) when a child is given an unusual name.

My SIL once gave me a huge lecture about how my daughter would never be taken seriously by the bank manager because we've given her a nickname as a real name.

suwoo · 24/02/2008 21:02

Puffling, I remember that too... I just checked your profile and see you are from MCR. Was it in the MEN or the local paper? Are you from North Manchester?

My niece used to go to school with a little girl called Ikea.

CoteDAzur · 24/02/2008 20:55

Tiger Lily is the daughter of Paula Yates and Michael Hutchence (INXS singer found dead). Funny that the name seems to have found acceptance.

Botbot · 24/02/2008 20:49

Oooh, I heard of a Pocahontas McGinty. Pupil of a friend of a friend, apparently. I've always believed it but perhaps it is an urban myth.

LynetteScavo · 24/02/2008 20:45

I've heard there is an Ocean in the south of England, of high school age. I quite like it!

DH wouldn't let me call DD Tiger Lily.

I was walking down Argyle Street in Glasgow maybe 3/4 years ago and I heard a mother shout "hurry up Pocahontas"...

I've also heard of an Ikea.

queenofthedumbquestion · 24/02/2008 20:42

I once read of a Rocky and Buster, and they weren't the dogs

rantinghousewife · 24/02/2008 20:41

Lucifer? If I knew a Lucifer the very least I'd expect is for his every entry to a room to be preceded by the Omen music. (Can't remember the name of the tune, brain dead today)

MsHighwater · 24/02/2008 20:38

Re Pocahontas McKenzie, does anyone actually know from direct experience of a child named Pocahontas?

I've heard about this but always as a "someone I know heard it from someone they know" kind of thing. Suspect it could be apocryphal (Please God!)

Tinker, why would you want to call a child after the Devil?

I do know of a Blue-Jean (definitely true)

Tinker · 24/02/2008 19:22

No, I like it!

ProfessorGrammaticus · 22/02/2008 22:43

You're joking, Tinker - are't you?

igglepiggles · 21/02/2008 14:59

there was a little girl in nursery where i used to work called Praise i thought it was lovely there was also a little boy named fortune!!!

Tinker · 20/02/2008 23:38

Lucifer is actually a nice name though.

edam · 20/02/2008 23:26

bloody nora, puffling, it's bad enough as a nickname but imagine if it was his real name. Eek!

puffling · 20/02/2008 23:19

There was a Lucifer in our baby birthday announcements! The following week they printed an apology saying that it was actually the one year old's nickname, not his real one.

MAMAZON · 20/02/2008 23:15

i know a June born in July.

she was due in june and her parents decided on her name, she ended up being overdue but her prents had already decided on the name so gave it her anyway.

bookwormmum · 20/02/2008 23:13

I knew a girl called June who was born in... June. She hated her name since she thought her parents had demonstrated little imagination in choosing a name!! maybe September was after their birth month?

MAMAZON · 20/02/2008 23:07

Tony from East17's daughter is called Atlanta, she must be about 15 now so its hardly new.

i Actually like all those names bar Duran.
i don't think i would use them myself but i don't think they are that awful

youknowyouknow · 20/02/2008 23:01

was that Pocahontas McKenzie? Called out in a doctors surgery near me...

bookwormmum · 20/02/2008 22:56

We have lots of unsual names where I work since the nature of the job tends to attract people on working or ancestral visas. One girl is called Immaculate!!

Docia is another common name at work which I think it's quite pretty. I think it's often used as a surname though.

threestars · 20/02/2008 22:38

I used to work in a hospital, and I remember an Armani and a Lexus being born on the same day. Thought delivery suite had turned into a posh shopping centre.
Also one boy was named Anakin, after Darth Vader.
