I won't say what the name we'd agreed on was as I'm still hoping to use it but I need some back up options in case he refuses.

I like:

Betty
Penny
Birdy
Bonnie
Connie
Saffy
Daphne

The issue is I don't always like the longer formal versions (Bridget, Saffron, Elizabeth, Penelope, Constance). I want something easy to spell and that works on an adult as well as a baby/toddler.

Good click bait thread title!

It’s in baby names

FamilyFunTimes · 04/05/2023 20:42

I’m a Betty. I love it. I don’t know anyone else called Betty. I’m 26 years old. Never was bullied for my name and I don’t feel silly saying it as an adult… not that I’m bias.
My family all call me Boo, close friends call me Bet and strangers/work call me Betty. ☺️

Dingdong90 · 04/05/2023 20:38

I loved bonnie, but we went for ebony just for something a little different.also I wanted to double barrel her name with Ray,and bonnie Rait was a singer so I didn't want it to look like I'd named her after the singer ... She's as white blonde as it gets too so it's always a shock when we say her name because she's the total opposite 😂

Some of those names are fine.

I wouldn't go with Birdy.

How about

Betsy
Nancy
Tilly
Annie
Callie

hennybeans · 04/05/2023 18:55

You’ve got both my grandmas’ names on your original list: Birdie and Bonnie (Yvonne). So I suggest you Google for 1930s names to see what else you might like!

Birdie is an actual name and it suited my grandma. I hope it makes a comeback.

I met a little girl today called Mela, her "real" name is Melissa. I think it is such a lovely name and she can grow into it when she is an adult.

ourflagmeansdeath · 04/05/2023 18:21

Betty - It's really beautiful! Reminds me of the Taylor Swift song
Penny - Not for me, it's literally a coin
Birdy - I do think it's sweet but as a nickname - there's a film Catherine called Birdy where the main character gets called Birdy as Catherine means little bird.
Bonnie - It's not for me, too twee
Connie - Slightly better than Bonnie but not amazing
Saffy - No?? It's not good
Daphne - Beautiful, the best name on your list

W0tnow · 04/05/2023 17:25

I adore Daphne.

Zoe is another lovely Greek name.

Jasmine is also lovely. Jas for short.

Please don’t call your daughter by the nickname P (or Pea or Pee). Kids and parents can be cruel.

To be fair, kids can be cruel about anything, and in unexpected ways. I went to school with a Pea (Petra), with no wee-related comments on her name, and a Tamsin, who spent however many long years being referred to as Tampax Tamsin.

CabernetSauvignon · 04/05/2023 13:14

With the possibly exception of Penelope, I can't see that the full versions of those names are difficult to spell. Why not just go for those?

Whyisitsosohard · 04/05/2023 13:12

I appreciate name taste is subjective but I've also said several times Birdy would be a nn for Bridget not the actual given name. And no it's not a typo of Bridie, its an alt nn. Some of the other suggestions have been great food for thought which I really appreciate but bowing out of the thread now.

@Thirdsummerofourdiscontent , Elodie

@Whyisitsosohard , Birdy is a nickname not a name

booktokbear · 04/05/2023 13:01

I love Ophelia - Phee for a nn

FfoxRedN · 04/05/2023 12:51

A friend of ours called her little girl Zafia.
It could be shortened to Fi, Zaf, isn't common and isn't old fashioned.

Ottersmith · 04/05/2023 12:44

Will the child have his surname? And will you be carrying her for 9 months and birthing her whilst suffering great pain? Well then forget what he says you can have the original name wait till after you've given birth and see what he says then. Or say she should have your surname and use it as collateral. Also forget all the people on here jusging your name choices.

fairycupcakes · 04/05/2023 12:41

Callie?

EatTheDamnCake · 04/05/2023 12:21

In fact, my aunt Margaret (95) is always Marnie.

Ha I missed your post as I just mentioned Marnie it’s a great name (but don’t like Margaret).
