Ellis? For a boy

ILookAtTheFloor · 03/05/2023 11:25

So I'm pregnant with a boy after having two girls! DH and I had never agreed on a boy's name, were convinced this was another DD who would've been Margot, middle name Anne.

Alas, it's a boy and we couldn't agree. I adore Alastair but he won't budge. He thinks it's poncy. He likes names I hate such as Billy.

The closest we can get to agree is on Ellis. If you heard the name, would you assume boy or girl? I really want a traditional but not popular name. Is it a good one?? I need reassurance 😁

I think of it as a unisex name. There was an Ellis at DDs school, boy he’s 13 now and a friend of mine has a dd Ellis age 8.

Love it! It would have been on my list for my son but a close family member’s partner is a (male) Ellis. Know a female Ellis mid 30s and always thought that was quite an unusual name. High absolutely lovely people!

also really like Elliott.

MillieOns · 11/05/2023 19:14

I love Ellis (or Elis here). I like Billy. I hate Alastair

LaVitesse2022 · 11/05/2023 19:08

Not too keen on Ellis, I think Arthur is much better. What's the issue with it being popular? It's not like it's a fad name, it's classic and will age well.

letsgojo · 11/05/2023 19:01

Love it!

Waveyhouse · 11/05/2023 16:24

Ellis is derived from the name Elijah/Elias, so It’s definitely a boys name.
I have known of a few, all male.
It’s a lovely name op.

MMoon23 · 11/05/2023 16:14

I know two baby boys called Ellis in my local area. I Love it! 😊

I also know an older boy and an adult woman called Ellis, so gender neutral but I prefer it for a boy

I’ve only heard it for a boy. It’s ok, it’s very different to Margot though..

Love the name Billy and although Arthur number 5, it’s much nicer than Ellis..

kjv1234 · 05/05/2023 21:40

I have one! Still absolutely love it and you don't hear it all that often. Go for it!

stitchinguru · 05/05/2023 21:36

We have an Elis, love it. We get plenty of compliments on his name ☺️

SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 05/05/2023 16:03

I'd assume it was a boy as it's a boys name! A very lovely one too Wink

brassbells · 05/05/2023 12:34

Our DS had a boy in his class at primary called ELLIS they are mid 20s now 🙂🙂🙂🙂

Oldandcobwebby · 05/05/2023 12:11

I have never heard Ellis as a girl's name. It's got a bit of gravitas. I like it! Why people name their children with diminutives like Billy and Charlie rather than William and Charles is a mystery to me.

KirstenBlest · 05/05/2023 12:05

It's quite popular, #88 according to Darkgreener. The welsh version, Elis , is one of the most popular names with Welsh-speaking parents.

Ellis sounds not handsome to me.
You seem to like the Al sound.
I love Alastair.
Would your husband like Alister? It looks plainer but sounds just as nice.
Do you have an Uncle or cousin in the family who has a name that your husband and you like? Or an old family surname?Knowing an actual person can help.

I know a boy Ellis. Sweet kid.

Elspethelf · 05/05/2023 06:15

I think Ellis is gender neutral. The only one I know is male. I had it on both my boy and girl name lists, but didn’t end up using it. It’s lovely <3

theblackradiator · 04/05/2023 22:23
