If you knew / met someone who had just had a baby would you tell them you didn't like it's name ?

I am just wondering. Since dd was born 4 weeks ago we have had lot's of people comment on her name. Both close family and friends.
Fair enough if it isn't what you would choose but i could never say to someone i don't like your choice after they have called their child that.
We have had plain ooh i don't like that to omg that's a name of a 90 year old woman.
Poor dp who chose it and now i am thinking poor dd !
By the way it's Martha!

We had this with dd when she was a baby.

Her name is Rose and lots of older people were quite open in their thoughts,saying it was too old fashioned and a "servants" name.

Take consolation that you have taste and they don't.

BTw I love the name Martha.

How rude! Martha is a beautiful name btw but whatever you choose to call your child has nothing to do with anyone else.

Beautiful name - very classy, demure, and will stand out on a good way amongst the girly girly names super popular at the moment.

god no, any more than you would tell someone you didn't like their dress or whatever, it is terribly rude and ignorant

the only time I would comment is before the birth, if I was asked my opinion

Isn't that the name of the giant child in Gulliver's Travels? Not sure what they are trying to say about their daughter ?

That is so rude. I'd have a bank of charming comments ready to throw back at anyone... 'mmm, it is a bit unusual but we didn't want something that was common - you must have known lots of people with your name at school' etc.

How rude.

When we told people our new ds's name a lot of people were openly surprised and one said, laughing, "No really, what's his name?"
It is a common name in some parts of the country too, just not where we live.

Martha is a lovely name, as are Kitty and Edith!

Pity their ignorance and despise them.

(My BF was in a lift with her 6 week old DS and called him 'Buster' - his nickname - and the woman in the lift with her said 'Please tell me that you haven't called your child Buster' - BF was SOOOOO tempted to say 'Yes actually, I have...' - PEOPLE ARE V RUDE)

LOL Nab Have contemplated saying that we wouldn't visit again as it obv bothered them so much
It obv not just me then see there are a few rude people out there.
I see it on a comparison with saying ooh your baby's ugly isn't it! You just wouldn't would you !

I don't see why you should grit your teeth in face if such rudeness to be honest. Just tell them it is very big of them to say they will get used to it as it really is none of their business.

I think Martha is a lovely name and you need to tell people to not be so rude and take your baby straight off them if they are holding her.

BTW It isn't a name of a 90 year old woman as people tend to be named a lot younger than that!

I've bitten my tongue on a couple of occasions, but wouldn't say anything directly - after all there's not much point is there, and not nice to upset new parents. I guess Martha doesn't sound very baby IYSWIM? Great toddler/child/adult name, just no obvious diminuitive and people do like their "ie's". My parent's in law were apparently told that dh's name was a dog's name when he was little (although in fact it was the no1 boys name that year).

Edith - another nice name. dh wanted Edith but I wasn;t convinced. love it now.
