I am just wondering. Since dd was born 4 weeks ago we have had lot's of people comment on her name. Both close family and friends.
Fair enough if it isn't what you would choose but i could never say to someone i don't like your choice after they have called their child that.
We have had plain ooh i don't like that to omg that's a name of a 90 year old woman.
Poor dp who chose it and now i am thinking poor dd !
By the way it's Martha!

Pruners, I love "awkwardly-named"! I met a dear friend today who is pregnant with her second child. She told me her chosen names (I didn't ask, honestly) and although the girl's name is nice, the boy's name (and, worse, the nickname to go with it) are exactly what I would call "awkward". I did find myself dissembling somewhat.
OP, your family and friends are being very rude and out of order. Martha is a lovely name and even if it wasn't, they have no business saying anything negative at all. I wonder what they would have preferred?!

Only read OP - but hell, no. Martha is a gorgeous name btw.

DaphneHarvey · 16/02/2008 19:41

Never never never. Such a rude and hurtful thing to do. My best friend was considering calling her son Rex. I was quietly beside myself with horror but even though she is my best friend, who I have known for 25 years, I would never have said anything. Her choice.

BTW, I think you will find that Martha is becoming quite "common" (I don't mean that in a rude way, can't think of another way of saying quite a lot of people are choosing it). There are a few at my DD's school and this morning my DH got a text from a work colleague whose DW had a baby girl yesterday and they have called her Martha.

Martha is the new Ruby IME. (I think its a lovely name, fwiw).

martha is a lovely name. That really stunning girl of home and away is called martha.

Livvigirl · 16/02/2008 19:21

Martha is a fab name, if I have another girl I shall call her Nancy and thats for same kind of era, at least your have'nt called you girl, Levi, the choice of my sister-in-law (she's due in aug!) fingers crossed for a boy!!and then it would be Brooklyn.
Anyone who comments on your girls name has no manners and I would'nt worry about what their opinion was because their wrong :0)

scottishmummy · 16/02/2008 19:20

names are deeply personal choice.so if you as parents are happy of course i would not say anything. sheesh some people have no tact.

congratulations i think martha is a beautiful name

fingerwoman · 16/02/2008 19:19

no, I wouldn't. your baby- your choice.
nasty people who make unkind comments on something like a name.

colander · 16/02/2008 19:16

I might think OMG (although not about Martha: nice name) but I would never say it.

Boco · 16/02/2008 19:16

I just met a very lovely baby Martha and thought what a great name.

No one liked dd1s name at first - my mum said it'd always make her think of a lap dancer or a transexual - but she got used to it.

robinpud · 16/02/2008 19:14

When I phoned my parents from the hospita after ds was born and told them the name, my mother( aka the grim reaper at times) said " well dear that's going to take some getting used to" Tactful as ever!

Nobody else's opinion matters; personally I hope they all hate my choice and don't use it for their kids so mine can conitnue to be unique.

Frankendooby · 16/02/2008 19:14

For what it's worth I think Martha is a lovely name. And no I wouldn't say to someone I didn't like the name.To be honest I don't think I would feel that strongly.People name their children for all different reasons and it is up to them.I think people are rather odd to care so much about what someone calls their child

Pofacedandarrogant · 16/02/2008 19:12

I think Martha is a beautiful name.
If I didn't like the name I would not say anything if not asked, maybe just "very nice".
If I was asked, I would say it was not one of my favourites.
Goodness, names do cause a lot of disproportionate conflict though don't they?
Whether other people don't like a child's name matters not a jot surely?
I would ignore them all Lilyloo!

I don't think there is much point in saying anything afterwards, and indeed it would be rude.
If I was asked my opinion before a Baby is born, then I would say whatever way I feel about it...

theyoungvisiter · 16/02/2008 19:11

hooray! So pleased you and your DP are happy again!

The weird thing is that Martha (and Rose for that matter!) are such lovely, unexceptionable charming names. I literally cannot see how anyone could not like them! I mean Fifi Pixiebell or Donald MacDonald or Princessa Pontipine, granted, you can see why people might comment (although they would still be rude). But MARTHA?! It's a lovely, classic, dignified name for a girl/woman of any age!

Tcha. Tell them to chat to me and I'll set them right.

wobbegong · 16/02/2008 19:07

how rude! I love the name Martha!

lilyloo · 16/02/2008 19:06

Have just shown dp this and it has cheered him up thanks! So much so he has just opened the champagne i got him for valentines , here's to Martha.
Shame my family / friends can't show the same level of consideration you all have !

Martha is a lovely name. People can just be bloody rude (what is it about having a baby that makes some people think they can say whatever the heck they like?). A 'friend' asked me if I had chosen my DD's name (course I bloody well had!!!). Same 'friend' also asked what colour my DD was . DD is mixed race. Needless to say, I haven't spoken to said 'friend' since and don't plan to again. Ever.

ladette · 16/02/2008 19:04

Can't believe that anyone would comment AFTER a baby is born and already given the name. Bad enough that people comment on possible names before the event. Not just saying this, but Martha is a lovely name (thankfully, would find it hard to be 2-faced and write a supporting post otherwise!) A lot of names which are currently popular would have been considered old-fashioned when I was a child. William, Jack, Ben, Joe, Harry, Henry etc etc were all names associated with my Grandparents' era yet very popular now. Ignore the critics, they are rude and ignorant. Your DD has a lovely name and as she grows up she will "make it her own".Stop worrying and enjoy your lovely daughter.

clapton · 16/02/2008 19:02

Martha is a lovely name, my DS who is 8 had a Martha in his class, I think it really is a pretty name.

I cannot believe how people feel the need to give their opinion on other people's baby names. It has nothing to do with them!

GappyLaBore · 16/02/2008 18:58

no.

and martha is a perfectly nice name.
