If you knew / met someone who had just had a baby would you tell them you didn't like it's name ?

Wow, nothing new to add, just to say a 90-year-old woman? a) what's wrong with that and b) a 90-year-old woman like, say, Martha Wainwright?

I did find it hilarious to see the spasm of 'oh blimey' that came over my mother's face and a few of that generation when they heard ds's name - they couldn't help it! but i loved the name anyway and of course they were never so phenomenally rude as to say anything but 'how lovely'. Enjoy our beautifully-named baby.

NB what about next time you speak to the rudest ones, say 'we realised you were absolutely right of course, and we've changed her name to Jezebel'

To add to the many positive comments - think Martha is fab - i love old names - our little daughter is called Florence (again people either say how lovely or what, oh right??)I just ignore the plebs ! You have made a fab choice...(wink)

i think Martha is a lovely name - i thought about for my last baby - but i already knew of 3 in my town - so next time someone is rude about her name you can tell them to p*@s off - it's a very popular name nowadays

My late much loved Nana would have been in her 90s now and was one of 9 sisters, she was Edie (DD2s middle name) and amongst them there was a Nell (cool name), Florence, Jemima, Louisa and Martha (fab name.) I would never comment on a name someone else has chosen as they all grow into them but have to confess when B-I-L had firstborn a couple of weeks ago and was torn between 2 names to saying WE LOVE MAX, MAX IS A GREAT NAME, whilst not mentioning the alternative. Also love the name Ruby but have to sing RUBY RUBY RUBY RUBEEE, LA LA LA LA LA LA to myself and the name Lola cant be said in my house without someone singing SHE WAS A SHOWGIRL but I repeat, this in the privacy of my own home and would never dream of saying this to the motehr as they are both lovely names.

Just to add a girl I know has just called her baby Keith. I was thankfully to have heard the news by email as I found it really unusual in this day and age to call a baby Keith. However, her choice not mine.. none of my business.

an ex colleague of mine called her dd by a name i really don't like, but i never once said that to her, it would have been so rude to pass comment, her dd, her choice.

My 6 month old DD is Martha- 'tis a fab name. I think it is getting more common- it was no.99 in 2006 and no.89 (I think) in 2007. Good choice!!!

Ooooh Pollywobble - one of my dearest friends is called Leonard. He is lovely! He is the only one I know, though, and in his mid-forties.

I agree with everyone else, it is rude to tell someone that you do not like the name that they have chosen for their baby.

We have a Martha in DD's kindergarten class, I love the name and it suits her so well. Her sister is called Freda and her brother Anton and I find their names great too. So unusual amongst all the Leonies and Sophies and Lukas over here at the moment.

it wouldn't matter what you had called her I would keep my opinions to myself. for what it is worth I think Martha is a lovely name.

dd is named after her two great grandmothers. Now both sadly deceased, but I guess they would have been past their 90's if they were still alive. I think that there are patterns of names, and using names that are popular a couple of generations ago is very common. I used to work in delayed discharges, so looked at lists of elderly ladies and gentlemen on a frequent basis - many of these names are now turning up at the children's school (and why not, they are very nice names)

I think people who are so blunt as to say they don't like a name that you have called your child are pretty obnoxious!!!!! It is totally rude and cannot possibly achieve anything other than pissing people off so WHY on earth would anyone say something so stupid and pointless.

No! I don't think 90 year old women are called Martha. Thinking about women I've known who would be around 90 now, more likely names are Ivy, Edith, Hilda, Ethel, Lilian, Margaret, Gladys.

As a final thought, OP, I only know two Marthas - one is in her early 40s and the other is early teens. Both are very attractive, intelligent and distinguished!
