I am just wondering. Since dd was born 4 weeks ago we have had lot's of people comment on her name. Both close family and friends.
Fair enough if it isn't what you would choose but i could never say to someone i don't like your choice after they have called their child that.
We have had plain ooh i don't like that to omg that's a name of a 90 year old woman.
Poor dp who chose it and now i am thinking poor dd !
By the way it's Martha!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
dizzydixies · 22/02/2008 21:20

my mother was rudest re our dd2's name, and actually now I think of it dd1's name too

when we came home with dd2, she sat round table saying, how about Chloe or sophie they're much nicer?!?

just made me dig my heels in more

Phatmouse · 22/02/2008 21:18

I like martha, we get just the same thing with our son Isaac. My SIL point blank said we could not call him Isaac and my dad said Isaac was king of the jews, what ever that means (could swear it was jesus) however my dad is a little touch, bless him.

dizzydixies · 22/02/2008 21:06

I met ex colleague of mine who announced baby was called Zeff and I have to admit was speechless - I didn't mean to be rude but am afraid I may have come accross as that
in answer to op no certainly not intentionally and I think Martha is a fab name, on our list for this one!

bb99 · 22/02/2008 21:05

Lovely name! Do you know what it means? (just curious)

I wouldn't comment at all, too rude and none of other peoples' business, but had big foot in mouth incident with SIL when she was pg - DH and I both talking about names we would NEVER have and why (was also pg at time) and her first choice boys name popped up... .

Her and her DH were not happy...whoops and have named their ds using their first choice name!

sweetkitty · 22/02/2008 20:50

I think it's rude to openly say you don't like the name of someone's newborn baby. It's not your baby not your choice keep your mouth shut, thats my honest opinion. Names are personal some names I have come across I'm like yuck but I wouldn't say it to the parents.

BTW I think Martha is lovely.

JetPeanut · 22/02/2008 20:45

Martha is a beautiful name. Your DH has wonderful taste and your DD is very lucky! People can be so bloody rude and insensitive. Ignore, ignore, ignore!

Beenleigh · 22/02/2008 20:37

Martha is a gorgeous name

agirlandtwoboys · 22/02/2008 20:35

My kids are called Lily, Thomas and Ned. We are having Martha for the next if it's a girl.
We have had some awful comments about Neds name.
Ignorant shits.

Broodymumof2 · 22/02/2008 13:05

Just wanted to say Martha is my great grandmothers, my grandmothers name, and my mothers name and if my next dc is a girl she will be a Martha also to follow the tradition...i think it is such a charming name it can be "oldy worldly" (which i love) and modern..and to be honest if you have over opinionated

BibiThree · 22/02/2008 11:13

You would be entirely within your rights to respond to "oooh I don't like that" with a
"fark orf"

Really. How rude.

theowlwhowasafraidofthedark · 22/02/2008 11:12

Very rude. I wouldn't say anything however bad i thought the name.

Martha is lovely anyway so not only are they rude, they're wrong as well. PILLOCKS

thebluefoxategreensocks · 21/02/2008 22:15

Bit late replying to this thread (there's no way I can keep up with all the thousands of messages on MN! lol)

I can't believe people would be so rude as to make negative comments about your baby's name!! Have they never been taught better?!

In any case, Martha is a lovely name! Good choice, IMO!

missytabitha · 21/02/2008 21:00

Got to add to other posts, I think that is a totally gorgeous name and I have a great grandma and a friend the same age with that name which is probably why I think that. Both are two of the nicest people you could ever meet. And no, though I love the name you chose even if I didnt I would never say to anyone, its totally rude to do so.

PortAndLemon · 20/02/2008 22:50

I wouldn't, even if I didn't like it.

And Martha is a pefectly lovely name, and getting more popular, so your friends and relations are being even more out of order.

threestars · 20/02/2008 22:44

No, I wouldn't. Even on names for babies not yet born. If my friend liked the name enough, I'd get used to it. MIL has already commented on the one name I mentioned to her, saying "well I hope you change your mind by the time she's born". Don't think I have, either.
by the way, I used to work with a Martha and she was the coolest chick I've ever come across. Very independent, strong-minded, stylish and fun and devil-may-care. I've liked that name ever since.

MrsFogi · 17/02/2008 09:48

Extremely rude to comment negatively on your choice of name. The only acceptable responses are tto effuse about the name or if that can't be done convincingly, say nothing.

MrsMattie · 17/02/2008 09:28

I think it's outrageously ill mannered to comment on a child's name!

piratecat · 17/02/2008 09:27

just read your op, and have to say that yesyerday I was listening to The beatles, to the song 'Martha my dear', and thought that is a lovely name, and i would consider it if i ever had another baby!!!

People are so weird. Lots were unsure of my dd's name, but now its the 'norm' iyswim.

Hulababy · 17/02/2008 09:14

No way would I negatively comment on anyone's name in front of them. How rude!

BTW, I love the name Martha!

how rude people are!

I strongly suspect that lots of people have hated my DCs' names (really 90yo names) but only my mother ever told me so

I always say "oh that's lovely" or whatever.

BTW I do really like Martha (but it wouldn't have gone with DS1's name so a no-no for DD)

I have a pal with a small Sybil and she gets "oh, is that a family name?" often, which I think is rude as well...

Kindersurpise · 16/02/2008 22:41

polly

pollywobbledoodle · 16/02/2008 22:26

polly apologises to all baby leonards and their parents.....

lydiathetattooedlady · 16/02/2008 22:15

my little girl is Esme Kitty-Rose, i wanted her first name/s to be kitty-rose but i was told not to as its 'stupid' and she'd get picked on so hence chose Esme to be first name, when she was first born people kept saying it was 'an old persons name' or 'is esme short for esmerelda?' no its frickin not!

choosyfloosy · 16/02/2008 22:03

erm sorry, i mean of course enjoy YOUR beautifully-named baby
