Carlota or Maxima?

Hello

We are expecting our DD in a few more weeks and have narrowed it down to these two names. My partner is Italian and I'm half English and half Spanish.

We can't decide between these two names so hopefully getting some input from you all would be great. We also have no middle name in case anyone has any suggestions!

I love Carlota/Carlotta and it's on my shortlist but unfortunately DH doesn't like it 😥(He's Brazilian with heritage from all over, including Spain). I would definitely go for that! Congrats on your little girl and wishing you all the best with her arrival 😊

Maxime isn’t really a common name even in Spanish if I’m not mistaken and she will always be associated with Queen Maxima. Who’s a very beautiful woman with great charisma and sense of style but those are big boots to fill.

I would go for Carlotta.

Carlota is strong and sweet and a nod to English King Charles.

Unless they just like the name and aren't directing any nods that man's way.

@PickledScrump , the name is not much used in the UK and I'd not seen or heard it before. I was familiar with Carlotta from the Enid Blyton books.

If a child told me her name was Carlota, I'd hear it as Carlotta, and write it like that, and it probably wouldn't be just me.

We don't really have any concerns on pronunciation by Italian people with the Carlota spelling given that we have no contact at all with my partner's family and never visit Italy.

In general we are not doing the Carlotta spelling because I am part Spanish and prefer Carlota. She will have a super Italian surname and we are not that keen on giving her a full Italian name and cancelling all other cultures she's part of.

Of the two Maxima

I think Carlotta is pretty ugly compared to Charlotte.. however Max is so common as a boys name it would put me off a bit

How about Cosima?

The Dutch Queen Maxima is from Argentina. She is fabulous, so I have only positive associations with the name.

Maxima is easier but is the plural of maximum.

I agree. It's a name which will have zero problems with pronunciation with two t's, take one of them away and you're introducing problems.

The Italian side of the family will definitely pronounce it as @DuchessOfSausage says, as it's the double T that shortens the preceding vowel.
That said, they'd find it easier than Maxima which they'd just find odd.

@DuchessOfSausage I’m UK and ive never heard Carlotta /Carlota said any other way than Carl-otta. I can’t imagine anyone saying it as Carl-O-ta. It’s hardly an unheard of name.

@Statsinyoureyes , just because you think they won't doesn't mean it won't happen. If you think of words like rota, quota, iota or anecdota, they don't have an otta sound.

Maxima sounds like a sanitary pad size, sorry. Carlotta with two t's is nice.

Much prefer Carlota! First thought was Carlotta from Twins at St Clare's too, and sounds fresh and elegant. Maxima sounds a bit 'lumos maxima' and 'circus maximus' and as others have said, reminds me of a maxi sanitary pad.

Carlota is lovely,really nice name that works well in multiple cultures

Personally I don't like Maxima as much- it just sounds quite harsh and like maxi-pads, and quite hard to carry off if she ends up at any size extremes
