I am German, partner is British and we are disagreeing on this name. Just interested to see what other British people think about it. Do you like it or not so much? What are your associations?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I like it. I named my dog Molly.

I work in a school and all the Molly's I meet there are nice kids.

DancinOnTheCeiling · 23/04/2023 16:05

*for Germans (not off!)

I’m German too and we didn’t like Molly because it sounds like German mollig (plump)

Agree with this poster. If you weren't German I'd say it's a nice enough name but off Germans it'd sound very weird and you don't want that for your child. (I speak German fluently and my best friend who is German agrees you can't call a half German child Molly)

Doodar · 23/04/2023 15:39

its wet and slang for drugs

The drug connection is all I thought of, sorry.

Lavenderlaze · 23/04/2023 15:20

Exactly @SingLikeADuck!

I think this thread is really showing who people are. I had no idea Molly was a nickname for MDMA and I'd never associate the name Charlie with coke.

Ffs! Is your name Pollyanna? 😄

Depending where you live OP, Molly is also a slang term/nickname.

You don't have to be a drug user to know these nicknames. They're pretty well known in society.

FayCarew · 23/04/2023 15:09

I know a few of them. I think it's nice.

It’s slang for a drug. I prefer Holly.

Holly is slang for people who snort drugs (holly roller). It’s fine op

WGACA · 23/04/2023 13:26

I wouldn’t call my child Charlie either for that reason!

Ginsworth · 23/04/2023 13:09

WGACA · 23/04/2023 12:53

Please don’t call your child Molly. It’s like calling her MDMA. Would you want to be named after drugs?

It's not really though is it? Calling a child Heroin or Cannabis would be like calling a child MDMA.
Molly is a name and has been one long before it was used as slang, it's no different to calling your child Charlie.

Theoldwoman · 23/04/2023 13:03

I prefer Millie (Millicent)

Tortiemiaw · 23/04/2023 13:01

My Molly (I actually preferred Polly..) is now 18 and I really do like it now. She's slightly airheaded but also on her way to being a professional classical musician so I don't really take notice of the accusations that it's a bit twee.
Probably old but I've never heard it being slang for MDMA!!

Kickingupmerrybehaviour · 23/04/2023 12:40

God I think it’s awful. Sounds like some unfortunate drudge for a Catherine Cookson book.

Londonlady1423 · 23/04/2023 12:37

I really like it, it's cute and easily recognised.
I feel there's been a recent resurgence in that name. However I do prefer Holly but feel it had a different vibe

Meceme · 23/04/2023 12:36

My Molly's in her late 20s. Her complaint growing up was that everyones dog was called Molly too!

WTFJanice · 23/04/2023 12:34

I really like it - it feels timelessly fresh and rural to me.
(Too old to hang out in MDMA using crowds!)

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 23/04/2023 12:34

Nah, lots of them, makes me think or drugs and very old ladies.

Fudgewomble · 23/04/2023 12:33

My association is with illegal drugs - ecstasy/ MDMA. Its the most common slang for those pills on the US (and is frequently referred to in tv programs in the uk on Netflix etc - it’s not a niche street word)

Hoppinggreen · 23/04/2023 12:32

Sweet and inoffensive but will probably never achieve much

Cue loads of people telling me about international lawyers called Molly

TinaTeaspoons · 23/04/2023 12:30

Not a fan. Prefer Millie.
