I am German, partner is British and we are disagreeing on this name. Just interested to see what other British people think about it. Do you like it or not so much? What are your associations?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

A but twee for me. Sweet for a small child.

It’s a diminutive of Mary. Would you consider Maria or Mary on her birth certificate? Molly as her pet name.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 23/04/2023 17:55

Always loved it and would have loved to name my own daughter Molly. But a family dog beat her to itt 🙈

TheaBrandt · 23/04/2023 17:52

My friends Dd has this name and it really doesn’t suit her personality- at all.

LlynTegid · 23/04/2023 17:49

I don't like the name. Was unaware of its use as slang.

I have a molly and have never heard of the drug connection! And her father is in the drugs squad in the police so if it was well know I assume he would have thought of that 😂

I don't know many other Mollys - but this one is a very sweet and funny kid!

Oh in fact I do know one more molly - a gorgous texan girl I met years ago!

It's really really well known! 😄

SneezyEvie · 23/04/2023 17:20

It’s ok, but I know SO many dogs called Molly.

Fudgewomble · 23/04/2023 17:19

I’m not a drug user and I don’t associate with drug users. However. I have a teenager and I also watch a lot of Netflix with him. Molly is ubiquitous slag in the US (like weed for marijuana in the uk) and because of global culture, young people in the uk are beginning to use the word Molly more rather than E. In reference to PP I don’t think it reflects on my personality, morals or good standing in the community to make this connection and to warn the OP about it.

fwiw I know lots of Charlies and I don’t make the connection with cocaine. If they were called Coke or Blow however…

Persuaderama · 23/04/2023 17:15

@FayCarew ok. But I mean it’s not popular slang for coke now and hasn’t been for years

BeverlyBrook · 23/04/2023 17:10

It is/was a maids name

FayCarew · 23/04/2023 17:02

@Persuaderama , yes they have.

Persuaderama · 23/04/2023 16:57

Nobody has called cocaine Charlie since the 80’s

Twoshoesnewshoes · 23/04/2023 16:56

Personally, I think it’s a sweet name for a little girl, or a dog or cat.
I wouldn’t want a name like this as an older adult, it’s too girly and informal.
agree with a pp, could you choose a longer formal name and use it as a nickname?

Persuaderama · 23/04/2023 16:52

It may also be a name for a drug - but that reflects the people who think that way. Says more about them

Eh? say this again but make it make sense this time.

pancakesandpepsi · 23/04/2023 16:51

I would never think of the drug connection with the name Molly and personally would not let that put you off OP if you love the name!
I went to school with a few Mollys but don’t know any little ones with the name. I think it’s well established enough as a name in its own right and no need for a longer/alternative version. If you love it go for it!

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 16:51

@Lavenderlaze the only Pollyanna I've known is a donkey Grin

I knew Charlie was Coke but I'd never associate that with a child I know called Charlie, if that makes sense

Persuaderama · 23/04/2023 16:50

It means MDMA to me. You can’t call a child Molly

Nighty · 23/04/2023 16:47

Well, thank you for all the thoughts and opinions! Definitely giving me some insights.

I was aware of the drug connection, but viewed it more like Ginsworth in their comment. Still interesting to see how strong the connection seems to be for some and generally how polarising the name is!

I don't usually like 'cute' names, but I do like Molly and Polly, and Millie.

icerosenovember · 23/04/2023 16:26

Moll Flanders 😂

icerosenovember · 23/04/2023 16:24

Highlyflavouredgravy · 23/04/2023 11:16

It's a slang word for MDMA
it remjnds me of a red faced washer woman in a mob cap

😂😂😂

GudiBrallan · 23/04/2023 16:18

Lovely.

HappiDaze · 23/04/2023 16:17

A bit like Alexa being a lovely name but you wouldn't choose that now for obvious reasons

HappiDaze · 23/04/2023 16:15

It's a lovely name but slang for MDMA so not one I'd be using

Restinggoddess · 23/04/2023 16:13

Well if we really want to discuss the name Molly- it was used to refer to a place where gay men went to live as they wished - a Molly house, back in the Georgian days. A place to dress up and even pretend to give birth

It may also be a name for a drug - but that reflects the people who think that way. Says more about them

I have a Molly - she is funny, smart, beautiful, kind, generous, open minded, loyal, popular, hard working and a fabulous human being.
Do not be put off by the comments here - if you like the name then go for it
