I am German, partner is British and we are disagreeing on this name. Just interested to see what other British people think about it. Do you like it or not so much? What are your associations?

Molly is one of my most favourite girls names.. I am mid 40’s, two teens and never heard the term MOLLY as a slang for drugs..

Not a fan. Prefer Millie.

Agree

suzettenoisette · 26/04/2023 16:35

I don't like it. Holly is much nicer.

Molly is also slang for drugs these days :( It's 90s dated as well.

Noorandapples · 26/04/2023 14:04

I think I know your partner irl, if his name begins with T and he's from north Yorkshire then yes he's been banging on at work about naming his daughter after drugs.

SemperIdem · 26/04/2023 07:14

I think the cohort of cats and dogs in which 1/3 were called Molly are dying off now so it should be fine to use.

midsomermurderess · 26/04/2023 07:09

I said it was a bit niche 😀 And it is historically interesting.

This might be a bit niche, but houses offering male prostitution in the 18th century were called Molly Houses.

I'd say that reasoning would only be employed by someone desperately reaching for a reason not to call their child Molly 😁. Or maybe Lucy Worsley.

Please don’t call your child Molly. It’s like calling her MDMA. Would you want to be named after drugs?

Don't be such a ninny.

Grace204 · 25/04/2023 13:15

I like Molly. I am aware of the drugs reference but I think the name has been around long enough for it not to be a deal breaker

COPPER3 · 23/04/2023 22:34

Very popular name where I live. Almost every dog and little girl under 6 is called Mollie, Millie, Polly.....

Dogsarebest · 23/04/2023 22:31

love it.my daughter is Molly.such a sweet name. Wouldn’t change it for the world.

TheShade · 23/04/2023 22:19

I associate it with Gen Z a lot, very popular name around 20 years ago. Seems a little dated now.
It’s a bit twee and cutesy for me but inoffensive I guess.

LiliLil · 23/04/2023 22:13

I have never taken MDMA/ecstasy but it was the first thing I thought of when I saw the thread title.

It is a very well known slang term for the above drugs.

CuriousMoo · 23/04/2023 22:05

GoodChat · 23/04/2023 14:54

I think this thread is really showing who people are. I had no idea Molly was a nickname for MDMA and I'd never associate the name Charlie with coke.

Yes some people are very sheltered it seems.

Fuerza · 23/04/2023 22:01

I prefer Polly or Mary. Mary is so rare now.
I dont use drugs but still know what molly is slang for. But so long as she doesn't have a sibling Charlie.

JosieK8 · 23/04/2023 21:54

I know a lovely Molly in her early 30s. I grew up in the uk and never knew it was slang for a drug but I guess I’ve had a sheltered life. I do know a few dogs also called Molly though

Spanielsarepainless · 23/04/2023 21:24

One of my grandmothers was a Molly. Also a niece. Nice but not a favourite name.

Nachobowls · 23/04/2023 21:15

Boring

Restinggoddess · 23/04/2023 21:14

Molly Ringwald
Molly Parker
Molly Shannon
Margaret Brown aka unsinkable Molly Brown
To name but a few

Then there is the name Mollie as in Sugden and Weir

If you like it - then go for it

Morewineplease10 · 23/04/2023 21:12

I like it and think it's sweet but not twee.
My nan was a molly!
When my mates and I were into MDMA, we never called it Molly!

Jeannie88 · 23/04/2023 20:31

Xxx

cptartapp · 23/04/2023 19:57

A pp has already said ‘cute’ so definitely a no.
Who as an adult wants a cute name?
Someone once said to me it’s the name you use when you’ve run out of options and cant be bothered thinking, and I kind of agree.

Arapawa · 23/04/2023 19:09

I love the name Molly. Gorgeous.

CurlewKate · 23/04/2023 19:00

It's a little girl name to me. It used to be a shortening/pet name for Mary or Margaret. How about one of them then use Molly?
