Dora variants

I love Dora but DH wants an unusual name and has agreed we can have a longer version of Dora but has ruled out Dorathy, Dorothea, and Theodora.

What possible variants are there are Dora which are more unique?

I love Adora (does it sound like Andora?) and I also saw Apollidora but its a but of a mouthful and I don't like the nn Polly.

I would preferably like the name to start Dora... rather than end in it just so Dora is an obvious nn but am open minded. Any ideas?

Is your DH by any chance called Andrew / Andy? Dorandy
or Steve? Doraste
or Mike? Doramike
or Matthew? Dormatt

I like Adora, because it's She-Ra's name (80s kid)

Dolores

I know a Doralie; I think Doralia is also used, probably mainly in Spanish-speaking countries/families. Salvadora, too. Also know a Dora whose full name is Adorata.

Lots of -dora- names evolved from two traditional names joined - Doralba, Doralise, Dorastella, Liliadora, Miradora. If you want something unique or rare, you could make up your own based on whatever other names you both like.

Isadora is beautiful but as you’ve said you can’t use that I think Pandora is your next best bet that Dora can be derived from? Or does your partner want a name that neither of you have ever heard of/make one up with a merge of names?

Dorabella would be unusual enough for him, he just has bad memories of a Bella from childhood

Alas he doesn't like Dorabella because of the Bella part.

But this is much closer. DH want a name that people haven't heard of before.

That is not a reasonable criterion.

emmathedilemma · 21/04/2023 18:59

If you want a name that people haven’t heard of before then you really need to make one up or go with something very unusual.

Isadora. But Dora is lovely. Name your child what you want and don’t over think it. It’s not similar to Isabelle. And it doesn’t matter anyway, especially if you will call her Dora.

KirstenBlest · 21/04/2023 18:40

Dorothy is nice, Dorathy is awful
Pandora

Dorabella. That is beautiful

Gorgeous name! I wished I was called Dorabella when I was a child, instead of my super 70s boring name that loads of other girls had too...

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 21/04/2023 18:14

Depends if DH wants ‘unusual’ in the sense of ‘not frequently used’ or ‘not widely known’, I suppose.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 21/04/2023 18:13

Dora in its own right is a very unusual name. Only 31 of them born in 2021 in E&W.
