Zephyr for a girl

mhck · 17/04/2023 10:45

I gave birth to a baby girl a week ago. My husband and I both love the name Zephyr and would like to give her this name. Years ago I knew a woman in the US named Zephyr so to me it's always been a name I've seen as a girl's name. Having looked into the name more it seems that in Europe it is mostly used as a boys name, although there are also some who see it as a unisex name as it is in the US.

I love the name and would really love to use it for our girl but I'm filled with doubt over whether the name is too much a boys name...

If we go for Zephyr I imagine her nickname would be Zeffie/Zephy.

Would really welcome hearing thought on Zephyr as a girl's name. Thanks so much!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I immediately thought of the Ford Zephyr. Sorry. It’s awful.

Oreosareawful · 21/04/2023 12:25

God no, its awful. Doesn't even sound like a name.

Viviennemary · 21/04/2023 12:23

It's dire. One of the worst names I've heard yet. Who would call their child that. I think its about time a government list of approved names was set up. Other countries do this.

PurpleishDahlia · 21/04/2023 12:21

It's a lovely name but for me it's definitely a male name, as I'm greek and I know it's a masculine word referring to the westerly wind. I'm sure non greek people would not be aware though.

clpsmum · 21/04/2023 11:34

Since when was it it unisex in the US?

I have been using a US based name discussions board for decades and while it pops up fairly often I have NEVER seen it mentioned or even suggested as anything other than masculine (and honestly the BNOG on there can be insane at times but this one is all male).

To be honest its ugly even for a boy though, it just makes me think of fingerprinting but if you really must go that route then Zephyrine is a very rare french feminine name.

I love Zephyr or Zephany!

Not keen at all

Reminded me of RHCP too

WhatHoMarjorie · 18/04/2023 11:16

I know an adult Zephyr. Wouldn't be my favourite name in the world but she seems to manage fine.

QuickNameChangeForMeToday · 18/04/2023 08:35

If you love it then go for it.
My initial thought was ‘sounds like a Bond girl’.

EllenLRipley · 18/04/2023 08:33

I know 2 boys called Zephyr.

Greenfairydust · 18/04/2023 08:25

Nope.

She will spend her life having to spell this to everyone...( I get that every single time and it does get seriously tedious)

And It just doesn't sound great either.

I would keep it as a middle name only.

erikbloodaxe · 18/04/2023 07:06

Unless you give birth to
A motorbike, plane, car, train or hot air balloon or indeed a warm wind don't do it.

CreepyQueen · 18/04/2023 07:01

I love unusual names but I really don't like it, so sorry!

ThomasinaLivesHere · 18/04/2023 06:58

I don’t like it but I have heard of it before. There’s an American politician with the name. Zeffie is cute but the full name isn’t appealing to me.

For Z names that are unusual I like Zelda.

ThePoshUns · 18/04/2023 06:53

I know a little Zephyr. I like it, I'm a chilli pepper fan though as are her parents.
It suits her and she's a really funky little kid.

hattie43 · 18/04/2023 06:42

Horrible .

I think Julia Bradburys son is Zephyr

sashh · 18/04/2023 04:33

I'd think you were bikers, if you have a boy will he be Harley Davidson?

DeflatedAgain · 18/04/2023 04:28

I'm not so sure on it😕 sorry OP x

user1492757084 · 18/04/2023 04:13

Zephyr is a French hot air balloon. I have heard the name used for boys before.
I prefer the name for boys.

Do you like Zena, Zephira or Phryne (Fry-nee)?

KillerSandy · 18/04/2023 00:04

Highworth · 17/04/2023 20:38

@KillerSandy

Yeah I am old😂

SOMumm · 17/04/2023 21:16

Zepherine is more romantic, as in the delicate thornless rose named after the French beauty, Zepherine Drouhin, certainly more feminine, a Zephyr to me is
a masculine, mischievous wind, as in Victorian illustrations, or a car ? Let us
know what you decide ?!
