How popular is Piper?

Ellsxox · 16/04/2023 17:33

I love the girls name Piper, and I’m considering calling DD this. Is it an unusual name? Because I haven’t met any. Is Piper a nice name? Do you know any Pipers, and if so, how many, how old are they and where abouts are you in the country? I live in a suburban area in London, and I can’t remember hearing the name so hopefully it will be nice and unusual. Opinions are welcome ❤️

Love Piper and I was a massive charmed fan!

AintNobodyHateMeBetter · 17/04/2023 20:32

I can only think of Piper from the prison series Orange is the new black. But I know it's popularity has been soaring over recent years, probably because of the programme.

Your suggestion that people change how a surname is spelt so that idiots who can’t read can pronounce it correctly!
that’s completely deranged!

People who pronounce Piper as Pie-per CAN read, that's how it's pronounced. If they want it pronounced as Pipper it's not deranged to suggest they change the spelling, because nobody is going to know that's how they want Piper pronounced

DGay · 17/04/2023 19:53

Piper was a name of one of the Charmed Ones.

AWholeNewWorld11 · 17/04/2023 19:04

I have a toddler named Piper, we’re in S E London. I absolutely adore the name and have had so many compliments on it. I haven’t met any others. I got the name from Charmed, which I watched when younger

sexnotgenders · 17/04/2023 18:56

I know 3. All under 10 years old. South London

FayCarew · 17/04/2023 18:54

It makes me think of the mother in the film Carrie. Not a good assocation

VerveClique · 17/04/2023 18:39

So many lovely names, but I can’t get enthusiastic about Piper at all!! It’s a surname, not a real name, a bit try-hard…. A appreciate lots of people on here know lots of lovely Pipers but it’s not to my taste at all!

For me it sits with other ‘girls’ names like Harper, Everly, Keegan, Mackenzie, Kinsley, Reid, Cameron.

Someone who does know posted whilst I was typing 😁

How come?

it sounds cute to me and I’ve never known one on real life

Just guessing because I don’t know the French language well but I think Piper will run into the same problems as Pippa, which is notoriously problematic outside of the UK.

’Piper’ is vulgar French slang meaning ‘to suck cock’. You don’t often hear it as a verb, more frequently ‘une pipe’ to mean ‘a blow-job’, but it would likely get a few sniggers. Similar innuendo level to Fanny or Roger, I suppose.

I like it. I've taught for 10 years and never come across one, but I think it's lovely

Justcashnosweets · 17/04/2023 17:44

I love the name Piper, and wanted to call DD this. However DP was totally against it.

Soproudoflionesses · 17/04/2023 17:36

I know one aged 11 ...can't warm to the name at all l'm afraid

I think you mean @Sourfairy as that was their suggestion, not mine, and I can’t work out if you’re on a wind-up. Regardless I don’t know how to explain to you any more clearly that there is no way in English pronunciation for Piper to be read as Pipper. The people who are pronouncing it ‘pie-per’ are the ones who can read. Soz.

Yes I agree, that’s the way it’s said so I’ve no idea why you jumped on me in the first place.

“It’s actually an old English name meaning pipe player.”

No shit…

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this Grin

maybe people should learn to speak English

WTF?

shadowchancesassy · 17/04/2023 13:30

I know one she's 8 and in my DD's class. Southeast

MissAmbrosia · 17/04/2023 13:28

Dd was at nursery with a Piper - they are 19 now.

Brendabigbaps · 17/04/2023 13:11

Sourfairy · 17/04/2023 07:52

If they pronounce Piper as Pipper then they don't really have cause to get annoyed at people who don't know that. I'd either accept the correct pronunciation or change the spelling if it were me

All I can think is female prisoners wearing orange.
It's a bit naff quite honestly but that might be your taste (not the naff bit!)

Don't use it if you ever plan to move to France...
