Roxana?

What do you think of Roxana? If it matters, baby DD will have English and Arab heritage.

And next question…. Is it usable if I’m not a fan of Roxy as a Nn?

I’d forgotten about this thread!

Totally outing, but Miriam Roxana is now 7 months :)

I still love her name!

What about Rosanna instead? Although you will have to like Rosie.

I think you can only avoid Roxy if you go by a different shortening instead straight from the start such as Xana but even then she may still choose Roxy later.

Pocodaku · 29/11/2023 07:31

How about Samiha or Tahira?

17caterpillars1mouse · 25/04/2023 08:19

I really like Roxana pronounced Rok-sarna

I imagine Roxy will be hard to avoid though, maybe Rox but some will still add a y

salamithumbs · 23/04/2023 22:22

Or Yasmine?

salamithumbs · 23/04/2023 22:09

I don't think it would necessarily be shortened! I know a Roxanne and nobody calls her Roxy.
I was going to suggest Anisa or Omima as I love them but don't often hear them but I see you don't want too many vowels! Maybe Maissane or Shirin? Or Rania, Samira, Malika..

Luredbyapomegranate · 23/04/2023 12:33

I like it, I know one -

I think it’s hard to avoid Rox though, so if you don’t like that, find something else

Fuerza · 23/04/2023 09:31

Not a fan but from a different background. I don't mind Roxy, it's simpler, less frilly, an instinctive nn for Roxana.

Spidey66 · 23/04/2023 09:28

I like it but spelt Roxanna.

Roxanac · 23/04/2023 09:26

Hey, my name is Roxana and I’m constantly asking people not to call my Roxy! I’m my previous job some staff called me Zana
My daughter is called Zennah Sabine. Everyone thinks it’s a beautiful name, especially as we shorten it to Zen, which has a beautiful meaning in itself.

namechangingforthis1 · 17/04/2023 07:53

My name is roxanne I have never been called roxy. I like my name. Roxana would have a similar situation to me I imagine.

THisbackwithavengeance · 17/04/2023 05:48

I'm not a fan of Roxana.

How about Rehana?

user1492757084 · 17/04/2023 05:34

Java
Ayesha
Anoush
Taara

fairycupcakes · 17/04/2023 00:00

I think it’d be pretty tricky to avoid nn Roxy! Roxana is beautiful though.

Some suggestions that may fit what you’re looking for :) -

Zarah/Zara
Nasrin
Amara
Mina
Nyla
Samara
Amani
Jamila
Karima
Leila
Neha
Yazmin
Sara

I'm with you OP. I also love the name Roxana but didn't use it because of the nickname Roxy. The name Ruby has really grown on me lately. It would work in both cultures.

Twizbe · 16/04/2023 21:08

What about Hurrem. Means joy in Perisan and was another name used by Roxelana

DorisParchment · 16/04/2023 20:26

I have a friend who is Roxana, and she’s known as Rox. We considered it for DD2’s middle name but went with Ruxandra in the end.

RebeccaNoodles · 16/04/2023 20:24

What about Farah/Farrah?

shutthewindownow · 16/04/2023 20:23

Stripper

Ha, DD1 is Zarine so these suggestions are along the right lines!

As well as working in Arabic and English, I want it to be not to ‘frilly’ (lots of possibilities are vowel-heavy, which I don’t love), and not used by one of her millions of cousins 🤦‍♀️

My friends daughter is called Sumaiya I also think this is beautiful how about Samia?

TangoTarantella · 16/04/2023 20:01

I know a Roxana who gets shortened to Rocky. Not frilly.

Not keen. Reminds me of an 80s 'dancer'

RebeccaNoodles · 16/04/2023 19:06

So pretty: What about nickname Zana? Or does she have to have a nickname? I know many kids with long ish names and no nickname eg a Tallulah. I love it, doesn't it mean 'little star' or similar. I also like Roxy though so not much help.Grin

Zana is actually lovely in itself. The more I say it the more I love it !
Could even have Xana

EmbracingTheEyeBags · 16/04/2023 19:39

Choconut · 16/04/2023 19:20

Yes the Roxanna's I know are always called Roxy even thought the mum's didn't want it. Sarina or Zarina is lovely I think if you like that and no obvious nn.

The only nn I heard for Sarina once was rina (pronounced Ree-na) and that was barely used to be honest.
Although I went to school with a girl called Reena and I also loved this name anyway
