Baby name and dog name sound alike

So i've seen a thread similar to this one so it is abit ridiculous but i need help.

I'm expecting my first baby in Oct with my partner however he already has 3 children so we have 4 between us. All the kids names begin with L and partner adamant babies name must begin L too, we also have a dog named Lola.

Now been as weve alreday taken 4 of the nicest L names, there aren't many nice ones left i like however i really like the name Liyla..

Problem is it sounds very like Lola and i think the dog is going to be confused anytime we call the baby which makes me a bit sad. I do have pet names i call the dog which we can use but she will still always come to her name Lola..

How much of a problem do you think this would be.. anyone got any experience with rhyming names!

Lilah. And Lola is close yes but how old is the dog? How long will it be a issue? My grandfather called his dog after his 2nd dd as he missed her whist she was sailing so they had 2 Rita's.

I quite like Lilah.

Although doesn’t it bother you that it’s something he’s wanted for all his kids regardless of partner - I just find that a bit weird and would make me question how he views his relationship to me.

I would go with something a bit less samey.

And yes Lola and Lilah are too similar. Although I did know a household with a child named the same as the dog...and the dog was there first 😂

Why must the baby's name begin with L? Because your partner says so? He sounds like a bully.

If you're not married it's not his decision, only you can register the baby. Call her what you want.

What’s his name ? Louis? Larry? Lenny?

This is a bizarre situation, frankly. It would be weird if it was a joint decision, but if your ‘ partner’ ( aka overlord) is imposing it, it is very unsettling. Why should you call your baby a name that has anything to do with his other children? Let alone the dog…..

Is he going to make them all dress in the same colour as well? And maybe get a matching dog collar?

I think you need to address this now.

I personally think as pretty as it is, Lilah and Lola are very similar, too similar if it were me choosing. At the risk of sounding really daft, have you tried saying or shouting Lilah in the dog’s presence and seeing if she reacts?!

She will. It will really confuse the dog to live with a Lilah. Dogs don’t process sound like humans which is why the best dog names are short with hard syllables. Lola is a pretty perfect example.

Lilah and Lola would be too similar for siblings, too.

I have a friend with a Lyla but I do feel it’s pretty similar to Lola.

I certainly wouldn’t be “forced” into sticking with the L if there are other names you prefer.

I knew a family when we were teens who had all the boys beginning with A and all the girls K. There were 4 boys and 3 girls and they were forever opening each other mail as they couldn’t distinguish who the letter was for until it was opened.

My dogs name is Luna. I love her very much but I wouldn’t call my child a name that resembled my dogs name in any way.

Why are you going along with this madness OP?

Call your dc any name of your choice that doesn’t begin with L. It’s your child as well.

If you're unsure about using another L but genuinely like Lilah, you could use Delilah as the full name. She can "fit in" with the others as Lilah when she's little but use the full name (or another shortening like Del or Dee) if she dislikes the L-theme when she's older.

I don't know about poor Lola - I think with the two ls in such a short name, even something like Lily or Lulu might trip you up. You just have to try and decide whether the similarity between Lola and Lilah will bother you or not.

If there's another name you prefer to Lilah, though, I'd go for that. My SIL is one of seven siblings (same dad, 2 different mums) all starting with S - she hated it as a child or teen and would've happily stood out as the only non-S! Everyone's different, though.

I think it's a lovely name and I would definitely use it (if you like it and you do decide to go for an L name - although I would agree with others this seems like a rule that doesn't really need to exist). Please dont worry about it being similar to your dogs name if you really love it. Your daughter will have her name all her life.
