I know 3 Teddy’s of various ages -

  • 15 months old - is already getting shortened to Ted by siblings/extended family despite the parents preferring Teddy
  • Teddy socially who is Edward professionally. I was so surprised to learn his name was Edward, but he is adamant it’s a name for family and close friends
  • 85yr old Ted who says he was never cuddly so can never remember being a Teddy

So I guess the moral of the story is, your son will probably make his own choices even if Teddy is the name you love

Ok? As I said, I personally can't imagine such a babyish name on an adult. I didn't realise that just because you happen to know some that I'm not allowed to think it's a stupid name for a grown up. Better let everyone know, no opinions allowed, this person knows an Adult Teddy, you must accept it as a good adult name.

I guess I'm just surprised by how limited your imagination is!

KirstenBlest · 20/04/2023 19:04

I like Dolly and I know someone with the name, short for Dorothy, I think, and back in the 1980s there was a Dolly on Emmerdale Farm. I'd use Dot for a Dorothy.

Teddy makes me think of a stuffed toy. I find most of the -ie names a bit twee, unless I've known an adult with the name. I find Charlie, Ted, Eddie, Tom, Tommy, Billy ok because I remember adults with the names when I was a kid.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 20/04/2023 18:47

No, there’s something more childish about Teddy compared to Alfie et al. I think it’s the toy connection. I wouldn’t call a girl Dolly for the same reason (and I’m aware it hasn’t held back Parton!).

KirstenBlest · 20/04/2023 18:11

When he's an adult he'll be one of Freddie, Alfie, Archie, Charlie, Evie, Ellie etc and nobody will think it unusual. I dislike the name Theodore. I like Edward, and don't think Eddie is babyish.

Go with Edward or Theodore!! Don't lumber an adult man with the name of Teddy, it's very cute as a DC but gives them the opportunity to change it when they grow up

Agree with this. You can call him Teddy but at least give him some options as an adult.

NewBabyonboard · 20/04/2023 11:05

maranella ·Wow you need the pity

Blaueblumen · 20/04/2023 08:00

Way too cutesy 🧸 for anyone older than a toddler.

maranella · 20/04/2023 07:55

Fine for a baby, wet afterwards and I pity any fully grown man with the name Teddy. I loathe the recent trend for giving cutesy names, seemingly forgetting that these people will grow up and need an adult name one day.

As I said, I know a couple of adults called Teddy - it's really not beyond imagination.

I know four Teddy's. Three of them are small dogs.

One of them is a boy in my teen DD's class. He goes by T and ignores anyone who calls him Ted or Teddy. I understand he was picked on quite a bit through school for it, as it is quite a foofy name once you get past toddlerhood (Ted is alright, although is apparently an "old guy name" according to my daughter).

It's way more common now though so who knows, he might end up being one of ten Teddy's. I just can't imagine an adult Teddy. It's very childlike.

Teddy is nice name for baby boy. And I also like Ted:-)

AppleKatie · 19/04/2023 11:33

in about 10 years you’re going to have to get used to hearing the name teddy on an adult. I’m sure you’ll survive it.

honestly what hyperbole

Blaueblumen · 19/04/2023 10:47

Teddy is sooo cutesy🧸

I mean by all means call your child Baby, Cutiepie, Teddy or Poppet at home.... but I'd hate to be called such names in public

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 19/04/2023 10:28

okay...

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 19/04/2023 10:20

He was a teenaged child @MurderAtTheBeautyPageant. I’m a teacher. You need parental permission to change your name by deed poll when you are a child. He changed it legally as soon as he was old enough.

His was the most extreme example but pretty much every boy I’ve taught who went by a cutesy diminutive in primary school changed it as soon as he could in secondary. Mylo became Myles, Howie became Howard, Jono became Jon, etc etc. People can have really visceral reactions to their names and they can become
lightning rods for all sorts of issues in their life and upbringing.

MurderAtTheBeautyPageant · 19/04/2023 10:13

To be fair that sounds like more of a problem with a very strange mother rather than a problem with his name. I can't imagine many parents being so absolutely controlling that they'd prevent their adult child from shortening their own name as they saw fit.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 19/04/2023 10:05

I very much doubt the OP is still reading but parents who are insistent on using cutesy names like Teddy as their child's legal name remind me of a very troubled young man I used to work with. His legal name was Tommy and he hated it, finding it babyish and patronising. His mother wouldn't allow him to change it to his preferred name of Tom, and blocked us from changing the 'known as' field on our systems. He saw a lot of professionals for various reasons and if we couldn't get to them to ask them to address him as Tom then the whole interaction would be ruined by his anger at being called Tommy. We had to get him replacement exam certificates after he ripped up the originals because they had to be issued in his legal name.

His name didn't cause him to be angry or troubled, but it caused so much unnecessary anguish. Please, give your children options when you name them.

RosaSkye · 19/04/2023 09:58

@NewBabyonboard
completely agree, but then I called my baby Ottilie which is HATED on here 😂

AppleKatie · 19/04/2023 09:23

It’s a lovely name.

I’ve found myself sitting in a cafe this morning and there’s two v loud people next to me discussing Rudy, Pops, Leo, Freddie and Sid and how they are doing in the local teenage football league teams. In this generation does Teddy really mark himself out as a target or unusual?

NewBabyonboard · 19/04/2023 06:39

I dont see people's issue with the name Teddy it's a brilliant name for all ages
It's is one of the most popular names at the moment which means this generation of children won't think anything other than that's the name
People are so judgemental on here honestly if you love the name go for it xx

Daisybuttercup12345 · 16/04/2023 22:39

You are naming a human being.
You love the name so sod everyone else, including your son. I don't know why you bothered to post.
If you have a girl next time call her Dolly.
What a twee little pair they will make lol

TrueScrumptious · 14/04/2023 16:06

I know a Teddy, but he’s Edward on BC. He’s now in his 20s. He was called Teddy by everyone until he started secondary school and then he decided it was babyish. He goes by Eddie now.

user1492757084 · 14/04/2023 11:13

I know of a man who was known as Teddy all his life. He was a bachelor and a funny good humoured fellow who was my father's age. He died and .. Edward (Teddy) Surname .. is on his gravestone.
There is also a Ted who is in his 30s. He is Edmund. Ted suits him and he uses Ted Surname as his TV broadcaster name.
