Our baby boy will have two older brothers and it seems to be a great fit. It seems to be very much "out of fashion" but we like it, what's Mumsnet's opinion?

Beautiful name.

Throughalookingglass · 09/04/2023 22:38

Its nice enough but I'd never use it in case he was called Jake at some stage. Jake is one of those names that I have an irrational dislike of.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/04/2023 22:48

It’s not out of fashion in the slightest. Where have you got that idea? It only dropped out of the top ten in 2018. Great name, very popular. I have taught lots over the last twenty years. There are three in my current year 11 class.

DrHousecuredme · 09/04/2023 23:01

I like it, I'd definitely see it as a "nice boy" type name, if such a thing exists.
That said, there are 3 or 4 in ds' year group so it's fairly well used. Still, not everybody wants a unique name do they?

cocksstrideintheevening · 09/04/2023 23:05

I know three under 8, it's a popular name

Girlsgirlsgirls08 · 10/04/2023 08:05

I like it a lot!

Jacob is fine and handsome, though I dislike Jake.
Do you like Tobias, Joseph, James or Caleb?

Keha · 12/04/2023 15:09

Was on our list, I think it's quite classic. Has been quite popular so there will be a few around but not like every second kid you meet. Has a nice sound, easy to say and spell. We also like Joshua, Caleb, Isaac (with a similar feel).

DowntonCrabby · 12/04/2023 15:10

I really like it and wouldn’t worry that is was “boring” just be aware how popular it is so there may be a couple per year group in school.

I’m also amused at the idea that Jacob is out of fashion. There are zillions of them!

Throughalookingglass · 14/04/2023 20:17

I only know one young Jacob who is approx eight years old and an older man who is in his seventies. Its not a name I particularly like, I think of it as an out of fashion name. I prefer the name Joshua. The equivalent (to me) of Jacob in girl's names would be Maud or Grettel. Nothing wrong with them but not to my tastel.

ClassicLib · 14/04/2023 20:18

Excellent name.

ScruffMuffin · 15/04/2023 15:46

I love it and don't think it's strongly in or out of fashion. Fairly classic name. It would have been on my shortlist for a boy if a relative hadn't used it first, but I had DDs anyway!

Babyroobs · 15/04/2023 15:57

Love it but then I'm biased as my ds is a Jacob ( aged 22 now). He was born prematurely and had to spend some time in a four bedded ITU at the childrens hospital and 3 out of the four kids there were called Jacob and the fourth was a girl !

ScruffMuffin · 15/04/2023 16:03

Clearly it was having a moment back then! My nephew Jacob is a similar age.
