Well my Esme is a meee and everyone round here is perfectly capable of pronouncing it that much nicer way.

LoudSnoringDog · 09/04/2023 06:45

Esme. I have an Esme- I had intended it to be pronounced Es-mee but seems no one was capable of that so she quickly became an Es-may

Cherryblossomtreesforever · 09/04/2023 06:40

I really like Ivy, but seeing it spelt Ivie makes my eyes hurt!

Arewehumanorarewecupboards · 08/04/2023 21:33

You already called her Esmé, you don’t like how people pronounce it so want to replace it with a frankly ridiculous spelling of a nice name.

Leave your poor daughter alone.

JustSophie · 08/04/2023 21:21

Are you Dutch by any chance? I only ask because one of my Dutch friends has an Ivie (pronounced Ee-Vee) and the Dutch would naturally also put an é on Esmé. If you are not Dutch and/or not actually raising your child in the Netherlands, I'd probably stick with the traditional English spelling personally, save her lots of hassle.

BurntOrange · 08/04/2023 21:18

I knew a Nigerian girl who was Ivie - it was pronounced Ee-vee-A - so it's a legit name, but possibly not with your pronunciation

Tellmethespoiler · 08/04/2023 21:15

Why would you? Both are ridiculous and make you look stupid or ignorant.

Esme is a beautiful name
Ivy/Ivie is probably a bit more common at the moment

Ivy may be...

girlmuma · 08/04/2023 20:33

I prefer Esmé. But why butcher Ivy?

MumOf2workOptions · 08/04/2023 20:21

It would have to be

Ivy or Esmee

No weird spellings? Why?????

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 08/04/2023 19:52

I think most people will pronounce ivie as Evie or think it's misspelled.
Because of that I would go with Esme or spell Ivy correctly.

strawberry2017 · 08/04/2023 19:49

If you spell it correctly I would say Ivy.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 08/04/2023 19:35

(Sorry, cross-post on the auto-correcting!)

EmpressaurusOfCats · 08/04/2023 19:34

Well, it’s better than Ivee or Iveigh. Although every time I type Ivie it autocorrects to live or I’ve so that could be annoying.

EstherHazy · 08/04/2023 19:31

Though largely common with just one E, Esmée is actually the 'correct' French, just to complicate things.

Ivie- without your explanation I wouldn't know how you pronounce it (2nd syllable to rhyme with I?) In fact my auto-correct made me have to re-type the word twice so I can imagine a lifetime of receiving annoyingly misspelt emails from autocorrect. Can you explain why that spelling? I love the name Ivy.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 08/04/2023 19:21

Esmé because of the wanky Ivy spelling.

SilentNightDancer · 08/04/2023 13:21

Esmé.

CurlewKate · 08/04/2023 10:12

And I speak as someone who spent nearly 40 years called "My-name's-Kate-spelled-CAIT" until I gave up.

CurlewKate · 08/04/2023 08:57

Has to be Esme. Don't condemn a person to a lifetime of "My name's Ivie-spelled IVIE."

LynetteScavo · 08/04/2023 08:53

Ivie. Do it. I dare you.

I thought it would pronounced Ee-vee, but I'm sure putting ignoramuses like me straight won't be too much of a problem.

ThePoshUns · 08/04/2023 08:32

Eye- vye? Don't be ridiculous

Blip · 08/04/2023 08:32

Ezmie Ivie

DanglingMod · 08/04/2023 08:12

Ivy is loads nicer than Esmé.

Esmé is a million times nicer than Ivie

pilates · 08/04/2023 08:10

Esme
