Freaking love the name Roux for a baby girl but no one else seems keen - I know it’s my baby, my choice etc but will I regret it?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

No. Just no.

@rattlinbog yes possibly, I just feel ruby is a little to popular for me!

Do you actually know anyone called Ruby? I can’t think of any adults I know with the name and I’m a teacher of nearly 20 years and can only remember teaching 2 in all that time. There also aren’t any among all my kids peer groups.

Mummyof287 · 04/04/2023 22:02

There is a Roo(?) in home and away but not sure how it's spelt.....there was also the singer called 'la roux' (saw her live once!) apparently the name was to do with her red hair... so I guess if you or your partner have red hair that your baby might inherit, then that could be a good reason to use it!

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/04/2023 22:01

I know two kids called Roux, but crucially I think, they are both French.

Sillysosij · 04/04/2023 22:00

I love it! Give her a boring middle name so if she doesn’t like it she can go by that instead.

DumpedByText · 04/04/2023 22:00

Peppercorn is better! 🙄

rattlinbog · 04/04/2023 21:58

Or Rosanna?

What about Ruby, Roo for short?

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 04/04/2023 21:55

She might end up training at Proux Leith's cookery school.

YouJustDoYou · 04/04/2023 21:55

Ketchup.

Diane is also the name of a sauce, and Anna is a potato dish. Lots of names have another meaning.

I think it's lovely OP. Suspect she'll spend a lot of time explaining that the 'x' is silent though!

Pretty sure they're called after the name though. Calling a child after sauce base would be weird.

And fgs don't go for Roue (pronounced differently anyway, it's Roué )!Grin

Smartiepants79 · 04/04/2023 21:53

Rue is a better spelling. It’s a herb from Roman times - meaning = regret.
I like Rue, not Roux or Roo or Ru. Not sure about the meaning though.

ThewaytoAmarula · 04/04/2023 21:53

I actually think Béchamel would be a beautiful name. Béarnaise too.

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 21:52

@BaseDrops i like your thinking!!!! ❤️

@MoongazyHare 🤣🤣 didn’t know the ‘regret’ meaning!

so frustrating 😭😭

JoanJettsMullet · 04/04/2023 21:50

Makes me think of the (male) red-haired river gypsy from the novel Chocolat.

BaseDrops · 04/04/2023 21:50

How often would anyone see it written compared to hear it?

Roux? Girls name
Hotvimto3 · 04/04/2023 21:49

Floury

HappyHealthy23 · 04/04/2023 21:49

"Roux" is a red-headed boy/man in French, as well as the sauce thickener.

MoongazyHare · 04/04/2023 21:49

Roux isn’t even a sauce - it’s a paste of butter and flour, to which you add milk to make a sauce. It is emphatically not a person’s name.

Rue has been used as a girl’s name, after the herb, but its meaning is ‘regret’, so not ideal to name your child that.

I think you have a case of hormones.

PrettyMaybug · 04/04/2023 21:48

No.

@0hs0s0rry @StillWantingADog i do agree but I just love the X spelling!

MrBenFan · 04/04/2023 21:48

Roux is the mixture of flour and milk that is a base for various sauces I think.
There was a character in the Hunger Games called Ru wasn't there? Not sure how it was spelt though
