Freaking love the name Roux for a baby girl but no one else seems keen - I know it’s my baby, my choice etc but will I regret it?

What about spelling it Rue like the actress Rue Maclanahan?

ArmitageShanked · 04/04/2023 22:25

I surprisingly quite like Roo. Definitely not Roux though. Now I just want anything with cheese sauce!

Just stick with Rodney 🤣

Quinque · 04/04/2023 22:24

If you like an x how about Xanthe?

newtb · 04/04/2023 22:23

Also it's a surname

PictureConsequences · 04/04/2023 22:22

It's a masculine spelling, so would be a no for me. Rousse is the feminine, but obvs no X .

SecretVictoria · 04/04/2023 22:22

Makes me think of the actress from ‘The Golden Girls’ (I’m old). Her name was actually Eddi-Rue and she obviously just used the second half for her stage name.

margegunderson · 04/04/2023 22:22

I know of a Roubaix

Moonshine5 · 04/04/2023 22:18

I suspect X as a letter in a name is not as unique as you might imagine

FlappyFish · 04/04/2023 22:17

I know an Irulan that gets called Roo.

QueSyrahSyrah · 04/04/2023 22:17

@Notellinganyone Roux (or prior spelling variations of it) has been a surname / first name / nickname in parts of France for centuries longer than it's been a sauce.

Which is not to say that's it an ideal name for a presumably British baby in 2023, but it's a fact.

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:15

@Twoinapod 😭 typical isn’t it! Lol

Twoinapod · 04/04/2023 22:14

I really like it. Considered it for DD2 but roux is too associated with the sauce and Rue is regret so there was no spelling with negative connotations

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/04/2023 22:12

Ruth with Ru as a nickname?
I also knew a Rhegan who shortened to Roo

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:12

@Teado best friends daughter is called that, although spelt Margot I definitely couldn’t take that and besides that not keen on it anyway.

Kanaloa · 04/04/2023 22:10

God no. I guess Prudence would maybe be an option? The one in Charmed was called Prue, which is similar to Roux in sound. Still not my favourite name to be fair but I think I would definitely use prudence to help me think twice about using Roux!

There’s also Ruth. And Reuben if you had a boy.

Smartiepants79 · 04/04/2023 22:02

Do you actually know anyone called Ruby? I can’t think of any adults I know with the name and I’m a teacher of nearly 20 years and can only remember teaching 2 in all that time. There also aren’t any among all my kids peer groups.

Yep work with one lol.

Teado · 04/04/2023 22:09

If you like the silent X , what about Margaux ? It’s a variation of Margo, meaning “pearl”

Notellinganyone · 04/04/2023 22:09

Noleafclover1 · 04/04/2023 21:48

Diane is also the name of a sauce, and Anna is a potato dish. Lots of names have another meaning.

I think it's lovely OP. Suspect she'll spend a lot of time explaining that the 'x' is silent though!

No - the names came first and the dishes were named after them. Not the case with Roux. A bit like calling your child gratin or Bearnaise.

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:09

@YouSoundLovely deep down I think I do need to rethink I just can’t shake it off! 😭

@Sillysosij ❤️❤️ we must be in the very small minority!

@Mummyof287 oh my gosh. Yes I remember her… unfortunately we don’t have the red hair gene so doubt very much that we could use that!

@GoldenCupidon ah yes. I suppose people would get used to it and soon forget the sauce thing 🫣🤞

@UndercoverCop never seen it - YouTubing as we speak! 🤣

Ruth is a lovely name

YouSoundLovely · 04/04/2023 22:05

Béchamel and Béarnaise would make lovely boy/girl twin names.

Grin

Glad you're thinking again, OP.

Yes, but those sauces came after the name, not the other way round.

UndercoverCop · 04/04/2023 22:04

Rubert (t firmly enunciated) NN Ru
Also can't get the episode of family guy out of my head where Stewie mispronounces things. Oh no it's Roooeened (ruined)

GoldenCupidon · 04/04/2023 22:04

If I met a baby Roux I’d soon get used to it and probably like it and forget the sauce thing. But I’d feel sorry for her having to confront people thinking “why is this person named after a sauce base?” the first time they meet her for her whole life.

I don’t think Rue is actually that bad, lots of botanical names around. I think there’s a Shakespeare quote about it though.
