Freaking love the name Roux for a baby girl but no one else seems keen - I know it’s my baby, my choice etc but will I regret it?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Apart from the sauce connection it just looks a bit ignorant as it's a masculine word in French, a bit like when people call their girls beau or beaux. I think Rue is ok spelling wise but I wouldn't want to call my child 'regret'. I wouldn't want to call them 'white sauce base' either though tbf.

Lwrenagain · 05/04/2023 06:42

@Bubnbutton how about Rúna? Google it, it's old norse I believe. The Rù (roux) as a nickname? I think it's cute x

Callixte · 05/04/2023 06:06

There's a character called Roux in the Rogue Angel series of books (about a globetrotting celebrity archaeologist/crime fighter who's the reincarniation of Joan of Arc). That particular Roux is a 500-year-old Frenchman (immortal, of course), so I guess it has been around for a while.

Just no- my ads on this thread have come up as Roo whiny the poo but also Vaginal yeast infections. Nooooo

TomatoSandwiches · 05/04/2023 05:24

Siouxsie
Dreux
Nyx
Lux/(e)
Devereux, French however a boys name, nn could be reux pronounced as a softer roux sound.
Bijoux.
Alix

Remember your child will have to attend secondary school and the kids are absolutely merciless when it comes to off the wall names. There's a girl in my dc's school called Cinderella, wtf were her parents thinking? The poor kid is bullied relentlessly and dc has said the girl wants to change her name by deed poll when she's 18.

Think very carefully before burdening your child with a name that will limit it's future social/employment opportunities.

Spelt Rue I think it is beautiful (and don't associate it with the regret meaning). Have loved it since the first Hunger Games.

It will be associated with "regret" by anyone who is literate and has a decent vocabulary.

People, you are naming an actual person, not a goldfish. Please have some common sense.

"Roux" is a red-headed boy/man in French, as well as the sauce thickener.

Was coming on to say it is a masculine word in French. Pop singer La Roux used to annoy me as it should be La Rousse or Le Roux 🤓

Turnipworkharder · 04/04/2023 23:06

Isn't that the spelling in cookbooks for making a sauce ?

Wha · 04/04/2023 23:04

No. It is a very stupid idea. You might as well call her gravy.

Someone upthread compared this to Steak Diane. But that is a sauce named after a goddess. Very different to naming your child after a sauce.

Stop thinking about what you want (which is clearly to be the mum to a ‘weird name’ child) and start thinking about what is best for your child. If you had been doing that you would never have come up with this idea.

Wren?

crazeecatlady · 04/04/2023 22:57

As in Kanga(roo)

@Seaside1972 my absolute favourite for a boy! ❤️we’ll see if I’m brave enough when it comes to the crunch! 😬

Rudy is fine for a boy

But I think OP you have to remember naming your child isn’t about you proving you are brave - it’s about giving them a name they will be happy to live with. You can always get a pot plant and give it a fun name.

KnickerlessParsons · 04/04/2023 22:54

Béchamel is a nice name.

Noleafclover1 · 04/04/2023 21:48

Diane is also the name of a sauce, and Anna is a potato dish. Lots of names have another meaning.

I think it's lovely OP. Suspect she'll spend a lot of time explaining that the 'x' is silent though!

Naming a dish an established woman’s name is not entirely the same thing as naming your child after a sauce.

gavisconismyfriend · 04/04/2023 22:50

How about Ruah or Rhuach - means breath or spirit.

Highdaysandholidays1 · 04/04/2023 22:48

I think Rue spelled like that is very pretty, and the connotations wouldn't worry me.

I know of a Roubaix

Oh gosh!!

It’s a lovely name. Go for it. I wanted to call my DC Rue but was dissuaded because of the meaning. I went with Rudy and then realised I could just call them Ru for short. So relieved I accidentally ended up with a Ru anyway. It was my favourite.

KindergartenKop · 04/04/2023 22:30

Roxanne?

Bubnbutton · 04/04/2023 22:27

@QueSyrahSyrah interesting!! 🤔

How about Rae?

Kanaloa · 04/04/2023 22:26

I guess there’s also Trudy which could be Tru for short. More than a bit dated but I’ve met a few little Mabels recently so it’s probably not as far out as I think.
